ONE HIT WONDERLAND: "Mexican Radio" by Wall of Voodoo

ONE HIT WONDERLAND: "Mexican Radio" by Wall of Voodoo

Comments

I saw Wall of Voodoo open for Gary Numan in the early 80's, on the Riverboat President, in New Orleans. I would not mind your thorough research on Gary Numan's "Cars" for a one hit wonderland. <3

Great job! Can you review "Ride Captain Ride" by Blue Images? No. 4 in the USA and Canada, first and only Top 40 hit. Perfect 70s one hit wonder goodness with fantastic instrumentation and simple lyrics about being free and having fun. Also its in Anchorman. Thanks for all the awesome videos!

Alas...I am a fan of Stan's collaboration with Stewart Copeland of The Police, "Don't Box Me In," from the soundtrack to "Rumble Fish."

I always kinda thought of Devo, Oingo Boingo, and Wall of Voodoo as three bands each using the same instrumentation and punk-inflected rhythms in parallel to make soundtracks for films that only existed in their heads, each in separate genres - Devo doing SF, Boingo doing fantasy, and Wall of Voodoo doing southwestern noir. (That Mothersbaugh, Elfman, and Ridgway all went on to film scoring to greater or lesser fame is kind of telling in that regard.) (Honestly, I'd LOVE to see just a walkthrough of the "MTV needed content" years - there's some really great stuff from that era, as well as a bunch of baffling stuff that's really just memorable for their videos.)

Yer face is a bit more visible than usual there

......................FUCK. I meant synthpop, not new wave, which is broader.

Todd in the Shadows

Your video is full of interlacing errors. Are you shooting this 1080i? If you want some help I can teach you how to make your video look much better.

I've been listening to Wall of Voodoo my whole life so I didn't even realize it was 1. a one hit wonder or 2. weird. Interesting to hear an outside perspective!

I'd guess it's this mexican radio station that inspired it <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XETRA-FM" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XETRA-FM</a>also the mexican band Kinky does a cover <a href="https://youtu.be/wQF-TRDqoKw" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://youtu.be/wQF-TRDqoKw</a>

Did You Get My Request, Todd?

Kind of dig the stuff with Stan in Wall of Voodoo and his solo stuff. My kind of weird.

This is another time you've called Devo the only major American New Wave act? Are The Cars and the Talking Heads not considered New Wave?

Joe G

So hey, I can almost see your face in this video. Maybe you need to turn up the darkness a bit, lol And yeah, this is a strange song that I'm glad I don't hear all that much anymore. Although Kramer humming it will always bring me a smile.

"If you are an enthusiast of cowboy influenced synthpop" yes i am, and thank you very much todd! i need to check this guy out.

Future Kick was a good movie

LifeIsStrange

what uh... what are the other 2?

I'll happily pay you to do an episode on J-Kwon, how Tipsy managed to get to #11 on the 2004 year end charts is beyond me. I swear that song should've been on year worst of 2004 list instead of Jadakiss "Why", at least that song actually tried to say something(even if it didn't always succeed), Tipsy is just a stupid party song that isn't even catchy and doesn't even sound fun, it's the most uninspired and least fun party song i've ever heard(say what you will about "club shit" like Party Rock Anthem, at least that stuff had energy to it) it's so boring and lethargic that you can't even really dance to it.

LifeIsStrange

Hey Todd, when are you planning on offering Patreon rewards for OHW episode requests again?

LifeIsStrange

ha, i missed that you were a patron. thanks!

Todd in the Shadows

Also, I love your use of the word scanty. Makes me feel like a lobster boy.

The album version of their Ring of Fire cover is one of my Halloween traditions. Its just so... eerie, and creepy, and it just seems to suit the season.

No lie...I literally squealed with delight when the "Dog Police" clip started playing. I haven't thought about it in years.

Tony Goldmark

I used to LOVE this song when I was a kid.
