NEW VIDEO: You Don't Actually Enjoy Bingewatching

Hey everyone! This month, we're talking about the explosive rise of bingewatch-style releases, how we just may have hit critical mass, and the culture of serialized fanfic, webcomics, and indie projects that might help fix this. Inspired largely by the popularity of serialized projects like Dracula Daily, I was curious to look into what the appeal is, especially in a culture where we're so used to entire seasons of a show dropping all at once. This one is a little shorter than usual, actually, but I didn't want to drag it out or artificially increase the runtime. Nonetheless, I'm really proud of this one, and I hope you enjoy!

At what time stamp does it go from day to night?

Back in the late 90s, a half dozen friends would congregate in my apartment every Friday to watch G Vs E and Iron Chef. It was one of the happiest times in my life. No way to recreate it now.

One thing I really miss about serialized content being more prevalent is *SHOW* Night. Me and my friends would get together just to watch The Show we all loved and then speculate for hours afterwards. Having that weekly ritual was great for socializing, and is really missed in bingwatching, especially now that we're older with families and can't exactly just watch 12+ hours of a show together.

I hadn't even considered how now, to stay 'up to date', you must spend time everything all at once or else the wave will pass you by at horrifying speeds... and that there are SO MANY of them. Plus, while the "watching experience" is certainly more intense when binging something, I honestly feel like I have/had more intense conversations and debates for serialised shows. Like you said, it's there and then it's gone, and it can sometimes feel like you're watching to "keep up" rather than enjoy. Perhaps it's the crazed-early-2010s-tumblr part of me talking, but I really love weird communal analysis and adoration of TV. The concept of "spoilers" is also something I find quite interesting in our binge-watch culture, and how some people on the internet seem to think that it's completely fine to expect that everyone in fan spaces is fully up to date on everything, and if they're not they can't participate, and then of course the other people who actively want to ruin as many people's watching experiences as possible. Ugh. Also, thank you for reminding me of leeroy jenkins lol

The intensity is at 120% :D Nice video and arguments! I also think many people choose a series over a movie to get more chewable bits. Releasing stranger things now in full movie length really adds to the exhaustion. Of course I can eat one more crisp until the bag is empty but that does not mean I want a super-crisp that has the mass of a full bag.

I haven't watched yet, but I'm looking forward to it. You're right—I really hate bingewatching, in fact, and haven't watched new TV in years since the rise of episodes made with binging in mind ☹ Just not my cup of tea I guess.
