NEW VIDEO: The Horrifying Panopticon of West Elm Caleb

So this one is kind of a return to form! I haven't done just a flat out Social Commentary video in awhile, but I felt like I had a lot I wanted to say here. I'm not sure how this is going to be received, but I really hope you all like it. My intention here isn't to flare up or recap drama, but rather look at this instance as a case study and provide some thoughts and recommendations for how we engage with online content going forward. This is about surveillance, principles, algorithms, the social machine, and more. The video goes into some brief mentions of transphobia, so do be warned about that. I hope you all enjoy!

What's a topic that you think would make good video essay content but you'd never want to make it yourself?

eh.... do ALL patrons get shown in the end of the video..?

The point that sticks with me is how the ordinary social. media user gets pulled into the stronger rhetoric -- amplifying by using abuse terminology, or being more mean and cutting than one would in real life. The man who tweeted about reading in bars led with this in his excellent tweets about his contrition and what he learned. I certainly notice the engagement others' social media contributions get, and compare them to my own. Has my own language online drifted toward that meaner, louder, less kind zeitgeist the algorithms are encouraging? That's hard to measure, but I delete a lot of tweets a minute or two after posting them. Before I post, I want to be one of the cool kids. Once I post, I get scared of the panopticon.

This is a very hard topic to discuss and I appreciate your maturity given how little this topic has been given by literally almost everyone who talks about it. It's really good

Amazing. I think it's your best work.

Girl. I'm only half way through and this is already my favorite video you've ever made and one of the best think-pieces on this topic in general. Love this.

I... am very glad I have never heard of any of these situations before. Jesus.

"These systems are fucking terrible at making the right calls. They are very bad at determining who deserves to be objects of public shaming" -- reminds me of Richard Jewell and other public opinion cases... but of course those were REGULAR media, not social media
