Sorry for the delay on this one, y'all! Nevertheless, I'm pretty proud of it, and I hope you all like it. Enjoy!

NEW VIDEO: How The Internet Turned on the McElroy Brothers

Comments

It's amazing to hear about another corner of the internet to which I've been oblivious for so long. Thanks for making these videos. I love DMing but have trouble finding a group. Any groups looking for a DM?

This was fascinating. Came in with next to zero prior knowledge of any of these people or brands (save: polygon and among us). I hope we as a society start doing a better job talking about the toll and expectations that come with building a brand around yourself, or at least a version of your actual personality. The whole time I kept thinking that, two decades ago, the career path these brothers have been on wasn't even really a concept yet. They, streamers, and youtubers (even social media influencers) are all carving these new career path options with no examples of how to handle it long term. If you think of a career as something you can do from your 20s to your 50s or 60s, there's just no guide for them who have done it that long since it hasn't been around that long. So they have no idea what they should be doing to stay sane and successfully have careers in these industries for decades because the industries haven't been around long enough for good, long-term examples to exist. Seeing stories like this and what's happening at FBE and then seeing seemingly bold expanding business decisions made by the likes of Rhett and Link or the Try Guys...I just hope more honest conversations start to be had about what it means to make a career out of content creation that's based around you as an individual and how we as fans can show grace to artists who all inevitably make mistakes as they try to create full careers in new industries. This was a pointless ramble; but hey, I rarely comment around here, so why not.

I personally loved the video, must have taken a lot of work to put together! Bravo to both Sarah and Emily! An interesting topic well delivered <3

I do feel like the video title and premise were heavily inflammatory? My friends all thought it sounded pretty clickbaity too just from the title, none of them watched it and immediately grew defensive. I love all Sarah's content and really wanted to hear what she had to say, worried I missed something...but I didn't. I'm not mad, I'm just confused and a little skeptical. I recognize they're not perfect and they have made lots of mistakes, but the tone of this one just didn't sit right with me, and felt kind of like trying to make a negative reaction to mcelroy behavior and content way bigger than it is... Then again, I literally do not engage with McElroy content fandom. I follow their socials really casually and I watch/listen to their content and discuss it with irl friends. Maybe if I had glanced at subreddits or tumblr or whatever, I might have felt differently? But isolated on my own without the input of other fans, I didn't realize the take was that the McElroys are "hated" or dying out or anything like that??? Interesting stuff.

As a McElroy fan, I thought I had missed some big drama, but I didn’t… I spent two hours getting clickbaited! I’m not saying this to defend them, trust me, I’m the first to criticize them, but there was never a point in this video where a true tide turned against them. It left me feeling confused and underwhelmed. So, folks “turning” against the McElroys is just 1) Travis being, well, his usual self and 2) them not taking full accountability and bending over backwards apologizing for portraying certain marginalized communities insensitively? I feel like I’m missing something. Like, Travis is definitely insufferable and they’re all very white, straight, and cis but this isn’t new news. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I do want to say that I respect the amount of effort put into the video, I just think the premise is forced and manufactured.

These guys messed up the name of a podcast I am involved with after we paid for an ad read for the Adventure Zone. They called it like 3 different things on air. They ended up correcting it in the next episode but it was a bummer all the same.

...People turned on the McElroy brothers? Have I missed something? I don't use Twitter much so maybe I just didn't notice the Discourse. Gonna watch this soon!

Really great video, watched it with my partner yesterday via Nebula!
