Is it a coincidence that 2247 is ab urbe condita 3000?

2025-07-04 22:49:09 +0000 UTCOne of the great contrasts in Roman History to me was the Republic being able to rebuild its armies after the Hannibal Hat Trick of Trebia-Trasimene-Cannae, and yet the Eastern Empire was barely able to scrape up spare forces after Adrianople to tackle the Goths before giving up and letting them in wholecloth. I know you explained it at the time, but I still feel like I've a shaky grasp of how the empire got so brittle beyond "fifty years of turmoil and then Diocletian calcified everything". Any chance of a deeper explanation for how Roman manpower got so threadbare? The biggest "exception that proves the rule" in lessons I've seen you draw from Revolutionary history is Zapata actually having strong justifications for not compromising with whoever sat in Mexico City, whereas most other revolutionaries could have cut and run and greatly benefited both themselves and their cause rather than hold out for everything. Are there any other cases which defy the trend of the lessons you've gleaned?
