At the start of 1917, the Bolshevik Party membership was about 23k; by the end of July it was 240k! Materialists wouldn't attribute this shift to anything individuals or small groups did, but in shifting conditions in Russia making this shift in belief possible. That said, it was important that when this spontaneous moment arose, the Bolsheviks had the discipline and preparation to seize on it. Sorry for writing a whole essay here lol, but all of this to say that even if we can't 'do better' than Trump in electoral politics, right now at least, doesn't mean things can't change quickly, or that a well prepared minority party can't have an outsized impact when shit gets particularly dire!
