The Worst Song in the Shrek Musical

I love and totally agree with your take on Shrek, it's why I love Shrek so much and why, though I enjoy the sequel, I rate the original higher. Especially because of its ending, I feel Shrek has one of the strongest messages about self acceptance I've seen and that's always hit me hard.

imo, this song is about shrek mixing up the incompatibility of being a freak and a hero with the incompatibility of being a freak who is in love. while shrek radically accepts himself more than in almost any be yourself! adolescent media, he does experience a major form of change: enjoying being in community with other freaks. the thing that kept him from knowing that he could appreciate that was always tied up in what his society’s expectations of an ogre were. this song is a moment when he mourns not having what he wants, love and understanding, while also not yet knowing how to get that in a way that actually feels good. i think it’s a time that the show leans a lot on queer allegory which is has only medium success with.

no thank you

I kinda feel like Schaff and others respond to the song so much because it speaks to a truth that a lot of people feel, that we wish we could be things if we weren't held back by outside forces. It's a good song on its own (being an end-of-act-1 number and all), but I agree that in the context of Shrek it doesn't really work.

Seems like Schafrillas just kinda bounced off of it because he’s not really into theatre and doesn’t find the tropes of theatre appealing
