Mini-Episode 40: Chief of War

I always love to share with you about TV shows, movies and video games focusing on history. Today, I’ll tell you about Jason Momoa’s Chief of War, a series about Native Hawaiians at the turn between the 1700s and 1800s. And while I’m at it, I’ll briefly discuss my first impressions of the video game Ghost of Yotei (set in 1603, in Japan).

that's exactly how I feel. They are two related, but separate things. Being mad about the fact that A is not identical to B seems to be missing the point. It's not supposed to be identical to B. Historical fiction would probably be deadly boring if the authors tried to be 100% factual. Never mind the fact that no one would understand what anyone is saying if you were to use period-authentic dialogue

I just watched the trailer. Whoa. Can't wait to watch.

I find it interesting that you have such an open mind about historical movies and historical fiction. Some historians can’t tolerate either one and spend time ripping them apart for inaccuracies. I know of one history podcaster who refuses to even read historical fiction, an attitude I find to be a kind of snobbery. Yeah, I get criticism of how historical events are portrayed but movies aren’t made for historians, they are made for the masses of people. My perspective is like yours for the most part. It is always interesting to see a movie or read a book about the past and I try not to be too critical as long as the movie or the book’s authors have done adequate research. I cringe when a movie just seems like a dress up in ancient clothes and unrealistic dialogue and events. If a movie or book has shown that they have done good research, I can forgive some nonsense though. My main hope is that someone will want to read a book after seeing a movie. Maybe listen to you or Dan Carlin too. After all, the real history is always the most interesting and fascinating to learn. That is what we get from you especially!
