Re:Zero Season 3 Episode 1 Reaction/Review

Garfiel and Mimi are a highlight of the season for me. It helps they are the same age and they balance each other really nicely. Garfiel has the best single character arc across the season I would say, though other things happening are better on the whole. The hardest part of this season opening is the way Subaru sat and talked to Rem. From the way he talked, he does that every day.

Regarding Garfiel, I think it's completely normal at his age to have a crisis after realizing you're not special. It's quite simillar to Subaru's childhood issues. Not to mention, a big part of that comes from the fact that after the trial, he swore to protect the Emilia camp and he feels responsible for fulfilling this duty. It's his first goal after finally letting go of his past. The visions of Elsa also suggest that he must have some trauma from that fight. In the novels, it was mentioned that, because of what happened to his mom, Garfiel grew up with a strong fear of death. So the fact that he nearly lost really got to his head, amplifying the need to be the strongest. There's also some guilty consciense involved. No matter how messed up Elsa was, killing her must have had a big impact on Garfiel's teenage mind, especially, since, as Subaru said, he's "just a big, sweet idiot".

It's great to see Otto and Garfiel stick around for more than one season, besides the trio they make with Subaru works perfectly in comedic and pretty much every other situation. We got brains, brawn and Subaru with his ability. Also, since season 1, Subaru's name has been going around and in extension, also Emilia's. Subaru is now seem more like a hero, since he's already accomplished so much. As we knew from cut content in season 1, Al (the helmet guy working for Priscilla) was also from Japan. Meaning that the person they mentioned, Hoshin, was responsible for bringing japanese style furniture and housing to this world. Not to mention he founded Kararagi and either he also owned and created or was just used for the name of the company Anastasia holds right now, the Hoshin Company. Garfiel seems to really struggle with accepting that he's not the strongest around. He did get praised by Reinhard himself, so I don't think he's weak by any measure. Kinda cute to see Mimi also hang around him, the two go together surprisingly well. Definitely didn't expect to meet his mother though. The stuff between Wilhelm and Reinhard really makes me sad. Family shouldn't bear such a grudge towards eachother. I hope they manage to get along eventually. Not surprised at all that Reinhard was able to cook the okonomiyaki perfectly, he did have a lot of blessings relating to cooking after all. I believe there are also public speakers that broadcast stuff like the excercises Subaru and Emilia did, announcements, music or such in actual real life Japan areas. It's clear to see how closely this city resembles our world. The song Liliana sang here was called "The Sword Demon's Love Song, Act II". If you don't remember, Wilhelm's nickname was the Sword Demon. Very appropriate song for this part of the episode. It's why Subaru was surprised here, because it was about Wilhelm. I do imagine this song was something that helped Wilhelm reach out to Reinhard though. You also seemed to think that Heinkel, Reinhard's father, was the vice captain working for Anastasia, but in fact he is the vice captain for the entirety of knights for the kingdom of Lugnica. So in essence, all of the knights you saw in the royal selection back in season 1, when Subaru made a fool of himself, he is the vice captain of all of them, including Reinhard and Julius. Even though Reinhard and Julius have their own royal candiates that they are supporting, they are still a part of the larger knight army. It's like working two jobs at once, or so I understand it at least. Felt got chosen as a candidate because the insignia was glowing in her hands. What does that exactly mean? No idea yet, but I remember Old Man Rom saying something that it had to be an Astra of all the people to take Felt away and we never learned Felt's family name either, but we can imagine she's probably an abandoned child from some royal family or something. There seem to be connections we could draw but there's no real proof of anything yet. What Heinkel was saying, was that he still inherited the Astrea family estate and basically hasn't passed on the head of the family role to Reinhard yet so technically he has all the power and he could possibly abuse his status. Sadly, again, not enough information to say anything conclusive, especially since he got interrupted as he was about to say who he supports (most likely a different royal candidate than Felt). Right off the bat, I know you're bad with names, but Petelguse's full name was Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti. We now met the Archbishop of Wrath, Sirius Romanee-Conti. What a crazy ending to the first episode though.
