Ra, in the mythology, lives his whole life from birth to death every single day, at sunrise to sunset, as he is the god of the sun. Using the whole day passing as one's life, the riddle becomes representative of stages of human development. So at the beginning of ones life (the morning), you crawl on fours cause you're a baby, in the afternoon/middle of your life, you walk on two legs, and in the evening/end of your life, you walk with a cane, making it three legs. Certainly an all time classic riddle.
