A Big Life Change, a Small Schedule Change: Four items a week?

Hey adventurers! I had a great time seeing so many of you at PAX Unplugged on Friday: thank you for stopping by and chatting with me! I've already had the pleasure of asking you this question in person, so this post will come to those of you as no surprise.

A Brief Aside: I'll be taking two weeks off next month, probably from the 12th to 26th. More information to come in the near future as our plans solidify.

Bottom Line Up Top: My life partner and I are moving from our US home to the Netherlands in a month. To field the new challenges that await us, I'd like to reduce my weekly item schedule to 4 items, taking off Wednesdays, starting in the new year. I'm looking for your (honest) opinions on how this would affect or potentially shake your support of the Saddlebag.

TL;DR: There's a poll at the bottom of this post that asks for your thoughts on how a shift to four items a week would impact your opinion of the Saddlebag and your support of it. No wrong answers! Comments are left open for you to discuss. Please no arguing: if someone doesn't agree with you, that's okay. I promise you don't need to reply and defend my honor—honest. Just write a separate comment with your thoughts instead!

Leading up to this life shift has been hectic and challenging and emotional. As we prepare to leap into this new phase of our lives together, we find ourselves grieving a lot of what we love and the comfort of, well, our comfort zone.

To that point, I would be a poor partner if I continued working the hours I always have, just in a different place; I would functionally be leaving her more alone than she's ever been before, isolated across an ocean, for five days a week. Furthermore, we need to tackle a whole new set of practical challenges together: refurnishing a new home from scratch, handling (surprise) paperwork and documentation, and emotionally resettling and finding a community. It's going to be a tremendous amount of physical and emotional work, the sort of work that I can't comfortably leave to do on the weekends (or that can't be done then).

This is the turning point that a lot of creators eventually find themselves in: what's the most important thing in our lives? The fulfilling work, or our relationships? As creators we throw ourselves headfirst into making new and exciting things for the game(s) we love, and as a result often fall negligent to the work needed to maintain healthy relationships. I'm so grateful that my partner and I have the relationship that we do, and I want to ensure that I can continue to work on that as hard as I do with the Saddlebag. By reducing my weekly responsibility to four items, I open myself up to be more flexible as a partner, but also to maintaining my monthly responsibilities. You may have noticed that I owe you a pair of subclasses and setting still: they're finished, just not formatted and made ready for you yet. With a little extra breathing room in the week, I'll be able to continue delivering your rewards on time while having the freedom to live with my partner, who was the one to suggest I make daily items in the first place. I owe her everything, so I want to make sure our lives together can reflect that.

But I also know that you're the ones that make this possible! And thank you for it: your generosity and support continue to be life-changing, so I want to ensure you still feel compensated under a new schedule. I don't know what I'd post on Wednesdays, if anything, but whatever this revised schedule looks like, I want to open the floor up to you to say your piece about it!

Thanks for reading this far, I appreciate your attention and care, and cherish your consideration of us over on this side of the keyboard.

In summary, please use the poll below to leave your feedback on what a four-item Saddleweek feels or looks like to you. Again, this new schedule would take effect at the start of next month. No wrong or unwelcome answers: your support means your voice has merit, and I want to hear it! If someone disagrees with you, don't reply to it with an attack: submit a separate comment with your opinion instead.

I'll leave this poll open for the next two weeks. Thank you all for your support, time, and consideration!

Keep on adventuring!

Thank you, and best of luck!

The Griffon's Saddlebag

I would be lying if I said my partner and I haven't had similar conversations about moving to Germany. Everyone needs to find the best possible environment for their own wellbeing! Good luck!

Roland

My only demand of this change: I want some items specifically themed around the Netherlands and the culture / history there ( /s ). But in all seriousness, as someone getting ready to uproot everything myself, I totally understand what you're going through, and I wish you and yours only the best. The parts of the community that have commented so far already encompass anything else I could say, so I will just reiterate: do what works best for your family, and the rest will come in time.

Vaalgrum

Just make sure you share what life is like in the Netherlands!!!

Richard Guidorizzi

Life/work balance is hard for all of our to achieve. I think it is even more challenging for all of our artist friends and creators who work from home. I believe the order of importance (one that took me years to learn) is God, Family, and 3rd would be our Work obligations. You definitely should make sure that Dani is felt nurtured and cared for.

You have obviously thought about this a lot more than I have. Know that you have a fan here in Dallas, and I will be joining the Kickstarter when you decide to begin it. 😎. Good luck on your next adventure!

Meason Kolkhorst

This is great news! It will be absolutely brilliant having such a bright person joining many of us on this side of the pond. All the best to you and your partner. You will always have my continuous support.

JZ

Thank you so much!

The Griffon's Saddlebag

This is so kind! Thank you for the thoughtful words and compassion! I can make this content because of folks like you: thank you!

The Griffon's Saddlebag

They'll be done! 3 would have been theoretically released too close to the final delivery of Book Two, and that would have felt bad to both me and to backers' wallets. It also hovered around the 2024 rules' release, meaning that there'd be a lot of questions surrounding it before the publishing of it. The current plan is to release Books Three and Four simultaneously in a Kickstarter, which would give you, me, and the community time to prepare for it and evaluate what the 5.24 rules mean for the content.

The Griffon's Saddlebag

I’m already overwhelmed with the amount of content you put out! As a DM I love that I have access to the library of creations, but I can barely keep up with you so however you need to reduce will be perfectly okay! Congrats to you and your partner and I wish you both the best!

Jenneryy

I don't keep up with daily releases anyways. I see my Patreon subscription as paying for access to a huge catalog of items which I search when I need them. The fact that it grows by 5 or 4 items per week is a bonus. And, yes, i guess if it grew 0 items per week, eventually I'd probably just download it all and reconsider the subscription, but a slight decrease in the breakneck speed of new items being released would have been something I wouldn't have even noticed if not for the announcement :)

Lázaro Clapp

The amount of content we currently get is kind of insane to be honest. As an artist myself, the idea of doing fully rendered custom item illustrations AND coming up with new enchantments to go with them every single day, in addition to bonuses like subclasses and settings, would kill me within a week. Asking permission to scale back to something more within the realm of human capability shouldn't even be a question lmao. You're literally 99% of the enchanted items I give my players. After I post this, I'll go back to prepping some loot for them, all of which revolves around your items. You're an absolute beast in the world of third party publisher 5e items. I follow and even subscribe to a ton of other 3PP but no one does it quite like you do. I download each of your releases and squirrel them away to have in my arsenal for eternity, and you've provided more than I will ever be able to realistically use. Your creativity, ingenuity, and whatever performance-enhancing arcana you inject to produce as much as you do has breathed so much life into my games and shaped so many of my table's stories (when a character used his Barricade Shield to block off a too-strong-to-fight monster to allow the party to escape, my players didn't stop talking about how clutch it was for months). Even more, it's indirectly taught me so much about homebrewing my OWN enchantments within the realm of balanced play, which has done so much to build my confidence as a DM. And none of that would be worthwhile if you deteriorated yourself or your relationship to accomplish it!! Holy shit please love your lady and spend time with her and give yourself the self-care you need. 16 items/enchantments + a setting/subclass each month is still superhuman. For the love of god, be good to yourself. There's already several HUNDRED items in your catalogue to occupy us. I don't want art you had to destroy aspects of your life or health to produce, and no fan/customer worth having would want that, either. Take it from another artist who's been forced to learn that lesson already. We'll still be here.

Daarka

We love you Griff! Take it easy, you have done an amazing job so far. Come to Colombia anytime!

Alejandro Fernandez

I would make one request. I know it would be a major amount of work, but is there any chance of getting books 3, 4 & 5 out somewhere along the way? I would definitely purchase them even if you did not do it as a kickstarter. Regardless, no change in my support. Love your stuff! Use it as often as I can!

Meason Kolkhorst

Absolutely no issues with this. I'd be fine with even a 2-items-a-week schedule, especially if it meant it kept your currently awesome quality while also helping your mental/personal/social health. Please keep up the great work you do, so long as it's at a rate you are comfortable with 🤗

Sean Godde

I have no issues with you cutting back to 4 a week.

Zerglingdad

Always put your family first. Your family and your creativity will be all the better for it. It won't affect my support at all, and if it did, it would be to continue to support creators with this mindset. Sorry I didn't get to swing by at PAX..but I appreciate and use your content regularly. Even then, you could slow down and I could not exhaust all your prior content anytime soon. BTW: best of luck in the Netherlands... we have friends over there and I heard it is a great place to live.

Keith Henkell

Quality over quantity.

Zak Papalia

you already put out an insane amount of content, most of which is free to some capacity - i don't think anyone who actually supports your efforts would fault you for cutting back a bit lol

Pepper

Also, jeez-louise, take a whole month off to MOVE OVERSEAS. Please? For me?

Cera Fisher

This is so, so kind. Thank you for sharing and for your support! I'm *honored* to play a role in your adventures, it's such an overwhelming privilege to do.

The Griffon's Saddlebag

I just upgraded my support *so that* I could log in and tell you that ***I would never have noticed the decrease in items.*** It's not that I don't love your work -- I do! I have a whole stack of printed out cards that I keep in my DMing gear so that I can grab a super cool item to give to a player when it seems appropriate. I've used your items in four different games now. Most recently, I gave my middle-school age gamers their VERY FIRST Magical Loot Items (after nearly a year of play!). They ooh'd and aah'd most gratifyingly, and they have used these items very very well. The Cleric (10yo) LOVES her geode club that gets bigger with every hit, the Rogue (10yo) LOVES his lunar rapier that lets him be FRICKING INVISIBLE after TELEPORTING, the Druid (12yo) LOVES whatever ding-dang druid thing I gave her. The Wizard (9yo) not only loved and immediately needed to use his Ring of Retcon, but the kids then ended up insisting that the name of a void dragon keeping a shadowfell city under his claw was named "Retcon, Eater Of Cities", and they still don't actually remember what Retcon even means. All of that is to say, I am so sorry that you feel so much pressure to produce. That's just the capitalism talking, my dude. Get out of this shithole country, get to the Netherlands, and try to slowly absorb the fact that *you have already done so much incredible work that has brought joy and delight to so many people around the world.* You could stop tomorrow and that would still be true. If it were one item a week, people would still support the patreon in order to access the freaking beautiful art and the cards and the absolutely delicious story elements you have woven into all of these items. Four items a week!??! FOUR ITEMS A WEEK!?! Can you *imagine* if I gave my players four brand new magical items every session? It would be like trying to eat a whole cake for dinner. You're good, dude, you're good. Live your life and be with your loved ones, and we promise we'll all do the same.

Cera Fisher

You all pump out content like crazy, 4 items a week is still spoiling us.

KumaTheBear

Good luck on your new adventure! I'm here to support you and your work, not because I expect some kind of cadence of output.

Chris

Honestly I joined for quality, not quantity.

goku_mon

Honestly, a new item every day is too much.

Rusty at Atlundia

The way I see it is if you and your family come first, even if you released 1 item I’d still support you

Nik Balson

Definitely watch after your family first, Griff. Safe travels with the move!

Stormer13

Honestly, there is already so much content here that *anything*, even one new item a month, would still be worthwhile for maintaining my support!

Fanon Reinert

Honestly with a change this large, I would have expected a far greater impact. Take care of yourself first; 4 items a week is still a ridiculous amount of content!

Razshagaul

Looking forward to UK Games Expo and Essen!

The Griffon's Saddlebag

I think we're on the old Indiana Jones airline. Great rates, though.

The Griffon's Saddlebag

Honsetly, even 3 items per week would still be plenty

Silver Screen

You and your family are far more important than dnd items. Please take care of yourself. I, for one, will be here no matter what.

Mallow

Man, what kind of flight are you gonna be taking that follows THAT route?

iRocky777

It's a bg change sir Griffon! We wish you all the best, and we're thankful we were spoilt for 5 items a week to begin with

Tobias Arclightning

You gotta take care of you and yours first, g. I'd be just as stoked for 1 item a week as I am now! Any fan can see how much work and passion goes into Saddlebag and I hope they feel as I do. Rock on.

PopoThEpicDwarf

5 items each week is a lot of output - dropping down to 4 seems extremely reasonable to me.

somanyrobots

I'd be happy with even fewer. If your partner isn't happy, you're not happy, simple as that, and I'd say you've got your priorities straight :) And welcome to the EU, neighbor!

Christopher

Consistently blown-minds over here that you're able to do 5x week in the first place. Even without the relocation, "I just need a bit more recharge/week" would be 100% understandable and fine.

al mcwilliams

You should always put your mental health first, I’ll support the saddlebag no matter how many items you make :D

Puertas

I might see you at events in Europe - that's a nice unexpected change.

Thomas Bidaux

UNBELIEVABLE. PREPOSTEROUS. DEEP STATE!!!! FLAT EARTH!!!
