In Toriyama's version of the story, Goku wanted Vegeta to live so that they could some day fight each other again. Goku as a character is more flawed in the original writing and puts his desire to fight above other things, which becomes a trait of other saiyan characters later on too. These writing changes are some of the main arguments against the dub.
