2021-04-01 03:19:31 +0000 UTCI learned about Joseph Campbell’s (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Campbell?wprov=sfti1 ) work when I was in college and had wondered the same thing when deconverting from Fundamentalist Christianity. Campbell was a proponent of the idea of the Monomyth (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hero's_journey?wprov=sfti1) in comparative mythology and religion in the 1950s and well into the 1980s. Campbell has had critics saying that he’s overgeneralized theories and picks stories to fit into his preconceived molds of The Hero’s Journey but looking at the sources of the Wiki articles I linked can give you more answers to your questions than I have room to type out here.
