Until now, it seems only Varys really knew what Littlefinger was really capable of. But now he's shown his hand to Sansa as well. He played her, and then told her exactly how he did. He probably hopes she'll look up to him for being so smart, and that she'll be grateful for "saving her life". And to be fair, Sansa has shown to be impressionable. But she's also shown to be obstinate at times, flirting with insolence while not going too far. I love how you and Tyrion gave all the same reasons for who might or might not have killed Joffrey.
