"Wednesday" seems like a cross between the original TV sitcom / film version of "The Addams Family," which was mostly skillfully executed versions of one joke, (a weird and macabre family who don't seem to realize they are weird and macabre) -- and a contemporary teen-oriented cross between "Harry Potter" and "Riverdale." I'm not sure yet if it works for me. But the visuals and the acting in key roles are pretty good. I'm hoping for two things that could make this show great by the end of the first season: 1. Some insight into why Wednesday resents her parents so much ... something more than just that she's an angsty teenager. Maybe because they really ARE trying to make her in their own image, (though so far little evidence of that), or because she's striving to out-weird her already weird family. 2. Some slight shift in Wednesday's beliefs and world views that affirms her dark aesthetic and outlook, but curbs or maybe rejects actual evil stuff like revenge, cruelty, selfishness, etc. It would be interesting to see if they can show how a person like her can be a "badass queen" without being someone who in real life would be a horrible and actually terrifying or unpleasant person. By the way, I live next door to Vermont, where this show is very specifically set. They have taken some care to include authentic details of one of the US's smallest, lowest population states. They have the rural New England vibe down pretty well, and place names like Jericho and Burlington are spot on. And it's the sort of place that has more than its fair share of expensive boarding schools for rich people, in rural towns that regard them with slight disgust or suspicion. I'll be listening for some more authentic Vermont accents, and maybe references to ski resorts, maple syrup, and the Lake Champlain Monster -- that last one would be perfect for this show!
