I have pet theory about the providence of Angel's son - this is pure speculation, but also my own personal headcanon. It actually goes back to season 1 of Angel, with "I Will Remember You," when Angel becomes human. The Oracles said that that was "meant to be" and it wasn't a fluke, yet Angel took back the day and undid fate. My theory goes that in that timeline, the one that was "supposed to happen," Buffy would have gone back to Sunnydale, but not long after she discovers she's pregnant as a result of her and Angel's ice cream fueled romp in LA. She eventually tells Angel and he returns to Sunnydale; Riley and Buffy never happen and the rest of season 4 plays out pretty differently, though they still ultimately take down Adam. Nine months from "I Will Remember You," would put her to term right around the beginning of season 5. Buffy goes into labor and Willow tries to mitigate the pain with a spell to spread it out across all of the Scoobies, as well as Spike, but instead it creates a sort of Groundhog Day-esque loop, where each of them lives the day as Buffy going into labor, ending just before delivery, as Angel tells each of them how much he loves them and then the day starts over. The loop finally breaks, Angel tells Buffy he loves her; and Buffy gives it one final push. Buffy and Angel are introduced to their newborn baby son... and his twin sister, Dawn. Because the Monks see an opportunity. Why warp time to create a sister for Buffy, when they can mold the Key into a daughter instead? But, Angel took back the day and none of this happened. So when he tried to lose his soul with Darla, something else happened. Angel's soul reached out to the ether, but instead of being lost to it, it connected across time with a fragment of itself. The part of Angel's soul that combined with Buffy's create a new life, their son, in this alternate timeline; and much like Vampire Willow being brought through from the Wishverse, Angel's soul becomes an anchor and pulled his son through the ether and into the nearest womb - Darla's; where some high power invariably lent a helping hand to ensure its protection and growth.
