I do kind of commend this episode for trying to delve into the gang's complex feelings about Buffy's return instead of making it all sunshine and rainbows and I do think there is something to everyone's point of view, but it's just executed very poorly.
It never quite feels like any of characters are truly acting the way they (or anyone) actually would in this situation, which makes it harder to emphasize with them. There are some genuinely painful emotional moments in this episode, but they never really hit home because of that disconnect, so the primary feeling is one of discomfort and just wanting it to be over.
There could be a version of this episode with slightly better written and more nuanced characters that would have been truly incredible as well as painful, but alas.

Also, the directing sucks. But I'll say more about James Whitmore Jr the next time…

I enjoy the episode, because the first half is quite funny and the wrap-up is sweet.
However, I don't enjoy seeing it up for discussion, because too many fans IMO take Buffy's side unconditionally, and I find her behavior APPALLING here. The way she treats Xander and Willow! And I never thought I'd be taking Joyce's side against Buffy, but she's such a brat to her mom. OMG, a private school! No BOYS??? What is Buffy, 12?
Don't want to go all ranty…but I could. Ms. Princess Buffy works my last nerve here. Be better! Grr.
