Map of Continental Soleil (An Attempt)

So, here is a general map of continental Soleil, which doesn't include any overseas territories outside of this region.  I've posted this up on the website, along with Tori, Piers'/Gideon's, and Axton's family trees.

Maps & Trees

The main regions are in yellow with the regional capitals & large cities in black.  The text in red are the names of the fortresses/castles the main marquis families live in.  I've attached it to this post so you can read it better.

I haven't filled out the rivers on the western and southern part yet, and there are a few costal cities I haven't marked, but this is what I have so far.  I'm still getting the hang of the map making software.  It's pretty fun, but I'm used to PS and PSP, so there is a bit of an adjustment for me.

I'm trying not to overthink the mapmaking process.  I'm not a cartographer by any means.  I just wanted to try to visualize this.  The sea monster's name is Ballena, btw.

Also, I'm not sure if anyone is interested, but I thought it would be fun to let my patrons name a town or village or random business.  (Now you, too, can have your very own Chetterswickshire!)  I'm just not sure how to go about organizing it.  :T

The naming conventions are pretty proportional to naming conventions in Europe, so that's what I've been going with.

Anyway, if anyone is interested or has an idea of how to pick a site, LMK.  We can always name brick suppliers.  :D

Thank you for letting me know! I definitely can understand that. Moderating a discord can be very time-consuming.

Nope. I've thought about it, but have neither the time nor energy to moderate it. Also, I am worried it might get messy and I really just want everyone to enjoy their time reading and theorizing.

There is an upcoming chapter that goes over some technicalities with the comcry as it goes with a scene, but does have to to do with grounding and charging already mentioned.

Along the coasts, but I haven't gotten there. I'm missing some rivers on the western side, too. >_<

Thanks for explaining. Also, could you explain in one of your chapters how Comcry's work ? I mean they would need significant recharging everyday but no one appears to do that. Is there an in-place existing infrastructure system behind Comcry's ? A subcontinental empire the size of Soleil would not exist without distant communication, but the magitech behind Comcry's hasn't yet been given much of a lore-based explanation.

I was wondering, is there a Discord group?

On the coast, just below the 'T' in Delta. I imagine this is the village that spoke of sea dragons.

Well there’s definitely a city where those two rivers that come down for the Nordur region meet. Just where it is it would be a trade hub where minerals from Nordur and agricultural goods from the central eastern Anlar are shipped downriver to reach Horizon and foreign markets. I’m picture a bustling trade city with a lot of industry, warehouses, and merchant houses, that’s not nearly a clean or glamorous as Horizon. The Birmingham to Horizons London. I’d imagine one of the other big noble academies is there. I could see it being so big that the noble who should be over the city doesn’t have much actual control over it, making it a good spot for any potential criminal elements in the country to be based. Name wise I’m thinking something on the nose like Confluence or Union. You also can’t go wrong with something-port.

Not on good enough terms with the neighbors to have any roads leading off-frame to the east?

To the east of the Cosora Delta is the fishing village of Lutrae Landing. In addition to fish, the villagers also harvest shellfish, which includes pearl-bearing ones. Pearls are officially the monopoly of barony, currently held by the Summers, although they make it a policy not to look too closely, especially if villagers intend to keep the pearls they find rather than sell them. The pearl trade isn't big; there are other, more productive sources. About a third of the money from it goes straight back to the village for upkeep of the commons and communal 'shipyard', another third goes to the Empire for taxes, while the final third goes to the Baron's personal funds. Baron Summers is well past middle aged. His heir, Lord Summers, is in his thirties, while his own children are 8 and 10. The village was founded, according to Legend, by some fur trappers who were chasing a particularly vexing otter who had been harassing them. The otter led them to the small inlet that Lutrae Landing sits upon, and the hunters lost track, and decided to give it up for fishing.

maybe it's like Spain's and Morocco's strait of Gibraltar? there are countries just across the southern sea.

The main four Marquis families got their titles and land during the expansion period, when Soleil was just a kingdom in the Central Corridor. The Guevera Lords (who owned the land Daybreak Garden is now on) crossed the mountain range to conquer the southern portion on behalf of the kingdom during that time period. The Gueveras do have a portion of the navy, but the southern region isn't far across the water from another landmass. Tori's grandmother is an archeologist in Nazria, which is on that other landmass. Think of it as the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa. I have mentioned that the Marquis families are very close and work together, so their armies go where they are needed. Nordur in particular has been mentioned as lacking in resources and people, so their military is mainly logistics and emergency personnel.

This is mainly for world building purposes, such as a source for resources or a place for the characters to explore. This can range for an artisan traveling from a location specializing in printing on fabrics to the location of Tori's brother's Lycee Project - the greenhouses in Nordur, that she's going to visit (probably).

So Soleil is a subcontinent - only invasion route by land is from the east. But confused - shouldn't the Guevera's be a sea-faring family if they guard the South-west ? What does the Marquis family guard precisely ?

That is a good question! Soleil is more a peninsula that connects to a larger landmass that disappears into the frame on Osten's side. The four main marquis families got their titles during the expansion of Soleil as a kingdom in Horizon and the Central Corridor. They eventually conquered the southern and western portions of the peninsula, settled the northern region, and, currently also defend, the eastern region that make up the continental part of the empire. The map doesn't cover any overseas territories, city-states, or larger islands.

As far as locations go, would this be just for world building purposes like we meet a character and they describe it briefly or would it be some where the story actually takes place in?

Lictor Magnus

I had no idea it was a peninsula, I just kind of assumed it was more like France, with something to the east and something Spain like hanging off to the east.

Lictor Magnus

It is more a peninsula; the part the part that disappears into the frame connects to another part of the land mass.

I thought they shared a continent this looks more like Australia or a large island. Do they not share any land borders? In which case who exactly are the marquise nobels defending against

Matthew Coburn

So, based on this map, Soleil is like Australia? an entire continent for one country? Or more like a peninsula like Spain?
