Aila's Ramblings - 11/12/21

So, guess who hurt her freaking upper arm last weekend.  This stupid dork.  It’s not so much an accident as it is being old and sleeping weird.  Anyway, it was a strain to type for a day, so I decided to just write out notes for upcoming chapters and “The Abduction” using gdocs’ voice-to-text.

You can imagine how well that worked.  Here are some wonderful highlights:

And those were just the character names.  I tried to shorten Victoria to Tori a few times and it kept turning into “curry” so...yeah...that’s going to haunt everyone now.

When I started to sit down and actually type out the story in detail, there were many moments where I just stared at the screen thinking “wtf was that supposed to be”.

One of my long time writing friends uses voice-to-text all the time and she keeps recommending it, but I just never got the hang of it.  Maybe it’s the quality, or lack thereof, of the program I’m using.  Maybe it’s because I normally speak very fast and words get slurred together.  I don’t know, but now I only use voice-to-text for note taking.

And even then, I type faster.  Although, I did find that I paused less for breaks.  Likely because I had a headset on and it’s a pain to put it on single handedly.

As for the injury, it’s fine.  It’s not the first time it’s happened and I took proper care of it: rested that arm in a sling to keep me from using it (luckily, it was not my dominant arm), iced it, kept it compressed, etc.  It’s not going to hinder my writing much.  I’m just mad that I lost a day when I was feeling motivated.

Anyway, I hope you will enjoy “The Abduction”, which will be posted in three parts; the usual 5k-6k chapter size, within 5 minutes of each other on Sunday, the 14th.  It is a Patreon exclusive (I think that is the term) for the Tier “Toss a Coin to Your Writer”.  I’m aware that’s the only tier....

I hope that it gives you further insight into the Gueveras, her brothers in particular, and why they are so obsessed with Victoria in a way that wasn’t covered in that wiki-article.

Thank you for your time, everyone!

Take care!

I have found that having a good condenser mic and doing a "BBC voice" gets the recognition close to 100%.

Take care, you already provide so much quality content I think our main worry is a burnout at this point.

Mecanimus

No wonder after that terrible insult to water weasels.

Yeah, even with carpal tunnel I didn't change to speech to text, although I tried. Good luck! I always imagined it would be a problem of Investment in a good software that works. Problem is also I think in 3 languages and moving from one to other is usually not recognizable, but whatevs. I am looking forward to Sunday and heal well!!

Speech to text was having trouble with the word otter. This was terrible, so I tried to say "an otter is a water weasel". It got "Ann Coulter is a water weasel". I stopped using speech to text for years.

Summercat

Speech to text effectiveness depends heavily on clear enunciation, moderate talking speed, a decent mic, and a quiet environment. So if its messing up that badly all the time for you it'll be 1 or more of those 4 things that are causing your issues.

Take care of yourself. Love your writing, I have the same problem with voice to text. Usually just bite the bullet and write/type by hand.

Love the story! Looking forward to sunday!
