A RETURN TO FORM

I love this new series. Most people don’t know that I haven’t been shooting a lot lately, maybe one or two shoots a month, which is almost nothing compared to when I was having 6-10 shoots a week for so many years. Thankfully, I shot so much from November 2018 through February of this year that i have tons of new work to share over the next few months. My life is going through a lot of transition right now. Professionally, life has been a struggle since the wrongful deletion of my large Instagram following, but I’ve made do as best I can and simply refuse to complain too much.

But thankfully I’ve found a renewed creativity. I’m teaching a few small classes with Black and White film, which has filled me with a love and passion for the medium I had almost lost. This has let me to shooting much more black and white images, both with film and digitally, and I’ve never felt this way before.

I used to despise shooting black and white film, feeling it lacked the passion and intensity of color images. As a full-blooded Mexican with a passion for vibrancy, BW simply held no interest for me. But now that I’m teaching the process to young people, I’ve found a renewed appreciation for the techniques, processes, and end result. It’s been fun, and I had almost forgotten how much I used to love pure image making.

So in that spirit, here is a series of everyone’s favorite goofball Shaley, wearing her favorite hat that I also used to hate but now appreciate. Taken in a Herb Ritts style, I fell in love with this series even as we were still shooting it. I hope you love the tonal ranges and complicated, timeless styling.

Please let me know what you think, I’m eager to know what you think of this style and direction! Thank you again so much!

Totally get what you say about the vibrancy of colour and I do think it brings out your strong points that have amused me over the past few years, those being the way you play with light and shadows. That said, there is a crudeness that comes with BW that the vibrancy of colour fully steals.
