CAST IN AMBER

When boys are young, they hardly notice girls exist. It’s as if they’re sharing the planet with aliens that they don’t understand, nor do they want to. Then puberty strikes, and all boys want, need, is to be near a girl, understand them, or even worse, they don’t know what they want from girls. But they know they want them.

When I was a boy, dark and Mexican, feeling isolated like all pubescent kids do, the kind of girls I fantasized about were white. Forbidden fruit and all, you know. Pale skin, red-haired, like Kate Winslet, Scarlett Johansson Christina Hendricks. A woman made of breasts and fantasy and mystery that could fulfill all the passions I couldn’t even describe.

So when I was finally working with Amber Rose McConnell two weeks ago down in LA, I realized that she was truly my pubescent fantasy come to life. Shy, quiet, yet strong and confident, she met all the physical attributes I would have wanted back then, and here she was in the flesh.

Thankfully I’m over all that silly nonsense of putting women on pedestals. Here I was not batting an eye as she changed in front of me, stripped, posed and gave long, lingering looks at me through the camera. She is a professional, and so am I. I now know that the fantasy is just that. That what I really wanted was a woman who would make me FEEL that way I wanted to feel, not fit some odd and rare physical criteria.

I’ve had a lot of highs and lows the last year. It’s been rough. I don’t like sharing too much of my private life to people because frankly I don’t think anyone should care. But the brightest point of this whole year is my dear partner in life. She is everything I’ve ever wanted in this world and more. She challenges me in ways I hate, validates me in ways I crave, and simply is the most beautiful, frustrating, inspiring, elegant, adorably perfect person I’ve ever known. The reality of her is infinitely better than any fantasy I’ve ever had, and she is definitely more beautiful than anything or anyone I’ve ever captured with my camera.

Please enjoy these photos of Amber, who truly is a special, one-of-a-kind lady. But tonight I’ll be on a sofa watching Netflix with my girlfriend being the happiest I’ve ever been.
