The last shoot I ever did with Sid, before she moved away to college a few years ago, was also one of my first at the sand dunes, about fifteen minutes from where I live. On the drive over, Sid was her usual chipper self, regaling me with stories of her ex-boyfriend’s small penis, her struggle with acne, her hatred of judgmental people, etc., etc. She was still trying to decide whether to join a sorority or not, which I advised her not to. She said she probably wouldn’t, claiming to hate those kinds of women, spouting off about how superficial and immature they all were. But I could tell she was still trying to impress me, liking that I thought of her as a mature woman far beyond her years. It felt like she was saying all these things against sororities just to agree with me so that I would not lose my high opinion of her. She of course joined the sorority a few weeks later once away at school and unendingly posted those stereotypical social media images of her and her new “sisters” drunk and partying in togas and often less. I didn’t hold it against her and we’ve kept in touch ever since.

When we arrived at the dunes, I was a bit dismayed to discover the overcast weather, but she claimed she wasn’t afraid of the cold, which was my main concern, so we soldiered on. The first thing I did, after catching my breath from our ten minute walk over the sinking sand, was to set up a small background, created by a light stand and a wooden pole, driving both into the sand as deep as I could. I clipped a white sheet to the poles and voila, instant background. Of course, I realized I hadn’t thought the idea completely through, discovering I had in essence created a massive sail that the wind wanted to blow down as quickly and forcefully as possible. I braced it as best I could while Sid stripped naked asking for what I wanted her to wear first.

I directed her to put on an old white slip I had shot in numerous times before, which I had intentionally ripped and cut up a bit to create a “lost at sea” feeling. The garment was on its last leg, so once she slipped it on I decided this would be the last time I’d use it.

Sid pranced and posed in front of the background for several shots, with the whole apparatus blowing down at least three times. Not one for clothing, it didn’t take long for Sid to just remove the slip altogether and embrace her naked freedom on the deserted sand. Her tan lines were even more prominent than usual, something she had specifically worked on the previous days for me knowing that we’d be shooting soon. By the fourth time the background blow down, I gave up hope of it ever being fully functional and we moved to the opposite side of that particular hill.

Unsure of what to do next, I directed her to just prance around, walk as though she were the last woman on the planet, as if she were alone crossing a desert, isolated in a barren landscape. She liked the concept, and she went back to retrieve the slip, covering herself like Eve after the awakening in Eden, “hiding her shame.” I liked that.

Like all our other shoots, we didn’t have much more of an idea than “let’s get you naked in a (blank) environment,” so I just had her roll around in the sand, sit up, lay down, move around. After another mindless fifteen minutes of that, with the wind picking up and the sky growing darker, I decided to pack up our things.

The shoot wasn’t anything particularly special, but it was a nice diversion from working behind the deep fryer that day, and she needed a break from the stresses of moving and prepping for college. As always, she thanked me for “hanging out” with her, which most models say to me after a shoot. I find this so silly, since I thank them profusely for working with me and letting me capture them in a vulnerable state. When I have bad days, based on loneliness or harshly judging my self-worth, I think about all these special ladies and how they’ve said they trust me, respect me, enjoy my company. I am forever thankful for their time and support.
