HIGHER, Pt. 18

I was stunned by the sudden change in our circumstances, and I was unsure of why or how I had let the man force us out of the building. Even though I still had the keys in my pocket, I didn't dare upset the man further. Worse yet, for the first time in years, I was at a loss of how to react to the situation, especially with the man fuming on the other side of the glass door, glaring defiantly at us only inches inside the door.

Thankfully, Ana had brought her purse along, and only having parked halfway down the block, we walked to her car where she had a change of clothes. Still in a daze, I finally called my friends whose apartment it was and explained the situation, only to learn that the man was a new building manager and had already built a repuation of being unnecessarily aggressive and difficult to deal with. I hated to bother them while they were on their weekend get-away, but they made a call to the manager from their phones and angrily reprimanded him to the point where he grudgingly, reluctantly said I could come back into the building.

Sadly, it's true. Thankfully, I was always taught that the first person to raise their voice loses their argument, and almost without exception I've been able to keep a calm, level head when dealing with such situations. Thanks for the comment!

What an asshole. Good thing your friends were cool enough to tear him a new one. I swear, people these days are more out to scream "You're going to listen to ME, GODDAMMIT" instead of taking the time to fully assess the situation.
