Focus for the Wandering Woods - Poll
Added 2023-08-11 23:56:40 +0000 UTCSo, the wandering woods are a large area, and I have two options I can choose to do with it. Either I can go as I have been for them, and provide plenty of detail to flesh them out, or I can do my best to brush over most of the content and get them over with quickly.
I figured I should ask you all what you would prefer.

You do narrative of place very well, but in this case I think the depth should depend on the purpose of it. Are you just sharing the cool and beautiful place? Are you developing character or showing something fundamental about the world or its cultures? Is the slower pacing an element in the melody you are building?

2023-08-12 05:09:18 +0000 UTCHonestly I simply skim the battles. It has nothing to do with they're quality or style, I skim almost all fights in all books I read unless they're really short or it's an audio book. I've just been reading 4+ hours a day for almost 20 years now and and find I don't enjoy fights as much anymore. The outcomes still interest me though. I also greatly enjoy the descriptions of the dungeon, but I enjoy the character interactions and dungeon building more.

2023-08-12 05:07:58 +0000 UTCYeah i have no real problem either way and will enjoy it anyway as you have a thing in your writing for picturing scenes for us :P BUT :)) Swinter just above have a real good point, their are time and place and maybe pacing for these things... AND as you go for a big delve part in the last few chapter just when we all wait for the Zidaun and MC talk and etc about what will happen out of that and also with peoples/group coming into the dungeon... this delve part in my personnal view seem to be a bit at the wrong time/pacing, atleast im more for a 'shallow' delve (and not explored in deep and with full details) and so that the story advance for now as too many things are in wait and suspense As this delve part seem for the story (plot and etc) to just be a fast overview of some floor and more to let some character have some developpment (some of Gurek realization and etc) that need to be done for where you want things to go/to be for the next scene/plot (that we all are waiting for a long time) to come But save the detailled indepth delve and what you build/worked for the floor to be explored later in the story anyway (not lost), after the big things still waiting/pending as of now are more in place and its more calm with less of them, to have time for a more relax delve part detailled, or you can present it by Pov of others delvers (newbie?), reports who talk about it by official people, or talk between character/group in bar or etc, plenty of occasion to use these material and maybe also to not bring all of it in one big part too for pacing or worlbuilding (as it need the right moment), you can maybe sprinkle it in multiple scene to add meat to other parts and use it also to bring other things/aspect (build more worldbuilding) together using it

2023-08-12 01:34:15 +0000 UTCDefinitively keep it short. Your descriptions are nice, but if you're going to describe Every room, you'll never get anywhere. You really should focus on what brings the story forward, and in this case you could easily skip ahead and the story would be improved by it. Save the fights and details for when they have a real purpose and there's some chance for impact or emotion behind them. You've done the Awe with the high level explorers. More of the same... Doesn't really do much. It'd be different if you later introduced someone more on par with the level of the challenge.

2023-08-12 00:16:33 +0000 UTCRight, and I appreciate that. However, I know there are people who relish the descriptions and battles, but it does slow things down. Which is why I figured I would give the option.

2023-08-12 00:11:00 +0000 UTCWhile building worlds and showing them off is cool, and you do a great job of it, personally the parts where they explore the dungeon are my least favorite. Especially considering how rarely you post (I don't blame you, having mental health issues myself), I'd rather the story move forward.
