He taught history at the University of Idaho starting 1986 and retired in 2020. He specializes in Russian intelligence and military history, modern espionage, anti-Semitism and the Holocaust, and the history of secret societies and the occult. Spence’s published works include Boris Savinkov: Renegade on the Left, Trust No One: The Secret World of Sidney Reilly, Wall Street and the Russian Revolution: 1905-1925, and his latest offering is Secret Agent 666: Aleister Crowley, British Intelligence and the Occult.
