You don't have to serve if you keep your green card. Many Korean celebrities who went to school in the US as teenagers held green cards and gave it up to do their military service because they are mainly based in Korea anyway and it would give them a bad reputation if they didn't serve (also a reason why BTS went to serve anyway). There was a notorious case of a pop singer 20+ years ago who dodged military service after getting a US passport and he was never welcomed in Korea even after being pardoned by the Korean government and issuing a long apology. This is why most Korean celebrities would rather just get their military service over with rather than risk having to hide from public wrath for the rest of their lives.
