supposedly when it ran the 3 episodes in the theater, this part made more sense since it was longer; they cut some scenes in the TV version. maybe we'll see those scenes later in the show, but I kinda doubt it.

If you know nothing about the show its fine hopefully they explain a lot. If you have watched gundam its cool cuz you get to see a world with different events cuz of the results of the 1 year war

2025-04-20 07:44:22 +0000 UTCAs someone who watched almost all of the UC timeline stuff a few years ago, this is an amazing episode to see and I literally got goosebumps from watching this lol. But I can totally get why someone that has no info on UC Gundam would be so lost. Honestly, I'm starting to think that this show might have been better as an OVA series so newcomers wouldn't accidentally select this thinking this is newbie friendly. Essentially this is episode is a mix of a recap of the original Gundam, the 1979 one that's 37 episodes, but also combined with "alt history" of "this is what would happen if Char got the Gundam instead of the main character of the original Gundam show", along with a combination of other retcons (I think they are following some Gundam Origins continuity where the Guncannon aka the mobile with the 2 shoulder laser cannons has already been mass produced rather than just a one of a kind prototype), so it has no room to explain anything happening; you're just expected to know this stuff beforehand for sure. The entire episode is one big nostalgia trip; alot of the shot composition, music (and the lack thereof at times as the original Gundam was super low budget), the sound effects, the eyecatches, and all of the stupid character names are often a literal one-to-one exactly the same as the original and was super cool to see with modern animation. If you want to a comparison, you can check out the 1st episode of the 1979 show and compare the first third of this episode and see how similar it is. Also the Gundam Char stole in this episode is supposed to be the OG granddaddy Gundam from the original show, the RX-78-2. For reference on the timeline, UC 0079 when the episode starts is essentially the year 2179 AD/CE. The only thing missing to really missing from this episode to complete the nostalgia trip to the original was the lack of slapping people.
