probably because its a japanese series and at the time this arc was written, it wasn't particular uncommon in japan for an adult to marry a teenager, so it wasn't portrayed as weird in the series. you notice a lot of relationships in anime with very strange age gaps due to this. For example in one of my personal favorite anime, Gurren Lagann, Kamina is around 19-23 if memory serves and Yoko was 14 at the time of Kamina's death
