Usually it would also have a combination of electronic/MIDI-controlled instruments and are usually more amateur/indie in production (though there are plenty of examples of higher end production also being DTM); the western equivalent would I guess be "bedroom production" like stuff you find on Soundcloud or Bandcamp.

I don't know the specifics because im pretty sure its a japanese term, but its a very big thing over in the japanese music production/composition space on twitter. you see mfs cooking up soundtrack music better than most anime ever get on there just with their pcs
