Because fruit flies can produce multiple generations in one year, they are very useful in studying evolution and how genetic traits are passed down through generations. Mice and rabbits also reproduce very quickly, but they take an awful lot of resources to keep alive compared to fruit flies. Plus people donβt protest when fruit flies are used for scientific research like many do when mammals are used."
