Shion also did not just cut Clayman's arms off in the novel, rather she cut them off and then some. Here is a direct quote from the Novels. "Shion bounded off, using both hands to swing down her blade as quickly as she possibly could. It was a single blow from her sword, a judging strike. Clayman did his best to block it, but his three pairs of arms were all sliced off, his body slashed diagonally down from head to toe. It was unsurvivable." I guess that is why they changed it in the anime. Or maybe they wanted it to be a tiny bit less brutal. Rest of the scene plays out the same so just like in the anime, Clayman somehow hangs onto life and awakens after having this whole flashback.
