Password test
Added 2023-09-22 01:06:09 +0000 UTCHey all! i'm going to be testing password for the next post, and the next post will only include dropbox links. From now on I intend to password protect my posts and have a specific password set for each month, each post will have a link to the password posted on patreon.
Edit: almost forgot to mention, this will not be an inconvenience for you guys since I'll make sure that the passwords are extremely easy to access as long as you're subbed!
If anyone has any questions, opinions, or objections on this, feel free to share!

Not a big fan of needing to use passwords and all that, but it does work and I had no issues getting to the recent art.

2023-09-25 01:28:44 +0000 UTCIt's an unfortunate, uncomfortable, and very personal choice. It is however, to put it very cynically, a choice of what market share you wish to appeal to

2023-09-23 11:10:33 +0000 UTCIsn't that more of a messaging problem though? My intention is mostly to highlight that this is part of a choice of two feedback loops, both of which technically have viable cases to make: one is aspirational and using the messaging of mutual trust and support, while the other is appealing to more cynical perspectives of reactive fairness. Both are viable paths, but typically someone needs to go all in on one or the other to be successful, as the support generated from good the good PR to the demographic of either of those perspectives tends to be mutually exclusive. Focusing on fairness makes those who want trust feel like they're assumed criminals, and focusing on trust will result in those who want fairness to feel cheated

2023-09-23 11:08:03 +0000 UTC@fen longpaw My main intent is not to chase sales, i don't expect to gain subs over this. Also this makes it more fair to the people who have subbed for the content compared to those who just get it for free. Lets say for example that youre someone who isnt donating/tipping and is actually paying for the content, why should you have to pay when several thousands of others are getting it for free? that isnt fair.

2023-09-23 03:19:18 +0000 UTC@vordic well they have more subscriptions than me, and i cant know if this leads to more subscriptions if i dont try it first, the movie industry is different than this.

2023-09-23 03:13:02 +0000 UTCAll that being said, there is a caveat: if the means of piracy actively costs you money, like they share the Dropbox link directly and excessive downloads actually increases your costs paying for the hosting subscription, that's a separate issue that I totally sympathize with and agree that they shouldn't increase your costs without compensation. I'm just saying that money you expected to come into your wallet that didn't materialize is fundamentally different from money you already had being taken out of it

2023-09-23 01:12:16 +0000 UTCThis is the response I wish I had the energy left to give. Gabe Newell, head of Valve/Steam famously said something to the effect of, piracy is not a security issue, it's one of customer service. I'm not saying that you are doing things you shouldn't that is driving people to pirate at the moment, beyond their own life circumstances. I'm just saying that seeing the pirated copies out there and thinking reducing them will appreciably raise your pledges is a textbook Business Major mentality of Lost Sales. The Love Guru didn't lose sales it was entitled to, it failed to earn sales with a good product and failed to trick them into spending money they'd regret through controlled marketing. The most demoralizing thing is knowing you actually produce fantastic work that doesn't need to trick people. The thing is Patreon is a support platform, not a store. Chasing Lost Sales just makes, at least me as a person pledged to support a creator who's work I enjoy immensely, feel cheapened to just a customer who bought a product.

2023-09-23 01:04:10 +0000 UTCMaybe the password led to the artist SEEING their art leaked less. But did it definitively lead to more subscriptions? If not then what's the point? This is called "security theatre", something that makes you feel safe but doesn't provide any actual benefit. Even if it did cause your art to be leaked less, if it does not also cause those pirates to come and subscribe then you gain nothing from the exercise. This is the same as movie piracy, people take the path of least resistance. The fact that they are pirating something can only mean one of two things: 1) they don't have money to give. 2) they have an easier time hunting down a sketchy website to pirate pornography. rather than getting it from the artists directly. Admittedly reason #2 includes hundreds of reasons grouped together but still. I am saying that PREVENTING piracy does NOT result in higher sales, the movie industry has proven that. What results in higher sales is: 1) more attractive content. 2) ease of access. 3) advertising/visibility (people have to know your content exists and find it notable).

2023-09-22 18:25:48 +0000 UTCive seen another artist do this (whose more popular than i am) and it actually worked for them, people stopped leaking their content, so i figured its worth a try. Also it should not be a hassle for patrons to type a 4 letter word to see access to the content, if thats too bothersome for someone then maybe they clearly dont care about the art enough to do even the simplest thing to get it.

2023-09-22 16:52:30 +0000 UTCa password wont really stop anything, someone will just unzip the files and repost them or post the passworded archive along with the password. I don't see what this accomplishes aside from being annoying for patrons :/

2023-09-22 01:32:44 +0000 UTCoh, perfect then! nobody should be pirating your work, that’s not fair to you ESPECIALLY since you work so hard on all of your artworks.
