The one time that Bookworm felt genuinly confusing. It was slightly more comprehensible in the Light Novel but still pretty bad.

If I remember correctly, the mother didn't fully understand what the father was saying either.
The father didn't agree in Lutz being a merchant or travelling, but when Lutz did it anyways his philisophy was that Lutz had to own to his own actions, and that if he was going to keep working as a merchant they weren't going to help him, but wouldn't interfere. That's what he saw as the correct thing to do... except he didn't feel it was necesary to say that because he thought it was obvious. But when Lutz complained on the lack of support from his family, the dad saw it as Lutz backing away from his resolution, which got him angry and got into a fight with Lutz... except that he never told him why he was angry, only telling him stuff like that he was acting as a kid and that he had to gro up... which everyone (Lutz and mother included) thought it meant that Lutz couldn't get away with doing what he wanted and he should obey his father. The "You can do what you want" was seen as a dismisal by everyone, as he said that in the context of Lutz leaving home to follow his decissions. In this case, it meant that Lutz had his father's acceptance as long as he was willing to do it regardless of his family opinion and support. But the father didn't think it was neccessary to explain all that, as for him it was obvious. The fact he got angrier and angrier the bigger the issue became, and that whenever anyone in his family asked him to talk to Lutz or try to solve the issue he told them to leave him alone and let Lutz handle the problem only feed the misunderstanding.
There are a lot of other stuff going on based on the culture of that world, but the big issue was miscomunication mostly on Deed's part. There are a lot of stuff like that in Ascendance of a Bookworm, but this case was particularly bad because by the end of it the only one that thought that the situation was clear was Deed, which was the only one that thought that he made sense and that everyone should have understood him.

Definitely some explanation was lost in the adaptation, but there also seems to be a significant degree of Japanese stubborn pride and family culture playing a part, and that may seem foreign to us.

I like your discussions. The way some points you make are so close to the actual thing, i have to force myself not to spoil anything in the comments. ... Also pls fix your youtube playlist. The first season is heavily out of order.

yeah, here we see a problem with the adaptation. In the books that whole thing was way more flashed out and a longer process. It was still about miscommunication but it was not nearly as out of the blue as here. And Myne´s intervention turned out to be more meddlesome then Benno would have liked.

I think you are right as I am a light novel reader so my understanding might come from having a fuller picture here and things being cut definitely didnt help.
But I feel like you are confusing the "do what you want" line with them accepting him going on the trip. That was supposed to be accepting the apprenticeship but they draw the line when a random apprentice Lutz is asked to go to another city. You wouldnt ask a 7 year old intern to be involved in the creation in of a new business in a different town. Their innate mistrust and lack of understanding of merchants didnt help either.
Then changing the contract to him not being a random apprentice and instead a leherl (usually done for exceptional kids when they turn around 10) kinda solve that.
still the lack of communication in the family is definitely the cause and I wholeheartedly think it is bad parenting. You can love your child but that doesnt make you a good parent

This subplot i didnt quite get behind
Problems with communication sure and all but the father was exceptionally dense in his communication. Go to the start of the episode and see HOW he says "Do what you want"
I wouldnt see it as approval either xD
