When Life Gives You Tangerines EP.4 PT2

Comments

The actor who plays the captain is the only actor in the drama who plays from young to old age. I've seen this many times already and I'm crying again.

It's the same guy Ae-sun was supposed to marry.. and if she did not run after gwan-sik, Ae-sun would be in the position of the wife who is obviously miserable because she ended up with the "haaakssi guy"... that's why he was only mean to gwan-sik.. Only IU played 2 roles.. Young Ae-sun and Geum-myong...

Fyi, I grew up watching my mother's hardship from mother-in-law even though I am in my 20s. To be honest, it was worse than Aesun. That kind of misogyny is not just something from the past, and it is still happening in many countries, which is the point of this drama. To help you understand, in the scene where Gwansik gives beans to Aesun, the grandmother-in-law, Gwansik's father, and Gwansik eat together, and the rest of the women eat at different tables. This was actually the case in almost every home. The men eat at the nice table, and the women eat at the worse table, feeding the children. Even I experienced it when I was young. Also, It is not that long ago that women were told that they do not need to exercise or study and that they only need to get married. I’m sure every women around my age heard of that when we were young.

It’s so angry and frustrating to see them treating Aesun so badly but more sadly the drama is not exaggerating the patriarchy at all. That kind of patriarchy and misogyny were common. Aesun at least had fantasy like green flag character, Gwansik. For example, as can be seen from the grandmother-in-law's words that aesun might’ve been more scolded if her husband was alive, the grandfather-in-law must have been even more patriarchal. Gwansik's father, who ignores his wife who has been harassed by her mother-in-law every day and takes his mother's side, quietly leads the patriarchy as if he were a bystander. And the mother-in-law and grandmother-in-law, who were victims of the patriarchy at first, are now brainwashed and harass Aesun. If Gwansik's father had taken his wife’s side a little more, she would have harassed Aesun less.

I think you were quite confused about how the middle-aged Aesun said "Steel wears out". You might forget this detail that Aesun many times told that Gwansik is steel to her and people referred him as Steelheart in the series many times. It is rather understandable that IU plays 2 roles because daughter resembles her mom. And the captain Sangil (Shit-gil) is the man that Aesun considered marrying before. The wife of his now is the second one after his first marriage with the 2 boys playing around at his home. If Aesun did marry him that would be her now 🥺 and you might forget that Shit-gil actually mentioned in the blind date with Aesun that he owned many boats and in this episode he even asked Gwansik whether he dared to shout "Shut it mister" as he said years ago.

It’s the same guy she was going to marry, it’s just iu who plays two roles
