i think its because he was affected by the blackouts. was supposed to be 6x1 episodes a week vs 3x2 eps a week but that was interrupted by that

But you're right, I think it's something One Piece is really good at, changing how you perceive something that came before by giving you the context way later. Makes it hella rereadable!
