Speaking of which, Bertholdt and Reiner used that one man's story as a cover for their past (they tell Eren this during the training in Season 1).

Annie was following Kenny to get intel. But, that reason got cut from the anime =/ So all we get is annie just randomly following kenny with no context.

She just said that because she was tailing Kenny for information but got caught and was trying to get out of it. Kenny said there’s no way she would be his daughter because he made a promise to his sister.
