2023-08-01 00:22:18 +0000 UTCLeaving aside personal preferences, that's a pretty bad take considering the anime decided to include characters from ordinal scale in a pretty important moment and the tech from Ordinal Scale is present in it (and it's also present in the next arc, Unital Ring). I personally don't like they way they were included, the execution was imo lacking and going for flash over substance for 75% of it, but without seeing Ordinal Scale it would be like "who are those random ass bozos suddenly showing up and stealing the spotlight".

2023-07-30 11:48:59 +0000 UTCOrdinal Scale is canon but contributes nothing to the storyline, it's honestly super boring until the last like 10-20 minutes of the movie. Progressive is based on the progressive novels which is essentially based around the progression of the time they spent in SAO so you see more of them progressing through the game with more levels and bosses compared to the original. As Progressive isn't really canon they have introduced new characters and changed the story a bit. TL;DR you don't have to watch any of the movies, this IS an anime where you get the full story from the seasons alone, Ordinal Scale is just a filler.

2023-07-29 03:19:37 +0000 UTCKirito is using the same character but at Yui's request he changed his hairstyle, apparently the spiky hair was uncomfortable to sit on. There are currently 3 Movies, Ordinal Scale, SAO Progressive Aria of a Starless Night and SAO Progressive scherzo of a deep night. Ordinal Scale is set in between Season 2 and 3 but the two SAO Progressive movies actually revisit the Aincrad arc/the first arc of SAO, exploring Floor 1 and Floor 5. You can watch Progressive at any time. I haven't gotten around to watch Floor 5 yet (I read the LN though) but the Floor 1 movie, Aria of a starless night is probably the best anime adaptation that SAO had to date, even though there is like 30 minutes of anime original content in it. Also just FYI since you brought it up, even if it was just as a joke, Asuna was 17 at the end of Aincrad, Kirito 16, so by now she would be 18 and Kirito is 17 (Asuna was born September 30, 2007, Kirito was born October 7, 2008 and it is currently the last days of 2025)

2023-07-26 22:29:34 +0000 UTCOrdinal Scale the movie between seasons 2 and 3. There are 2 more movies now - The Progressive Movies but they are updated retellings of the first story arc and no reason to watch them before finishing the show. Then you can go back and enjoy the first half of season one with movie-level animation and improved story telling. And in case chat didn't help. Kirito rerolled his character at the end of ALO so that he could take on Aincrad from level 1 again.
