History lesson for today. In 1816 Lord Byron visited the castle and heard the story of a monk who had been imprisoned in the dungeon for 4 years in 1532. He was inspired to write the epic poem The Prisoner of Chillon. He also left behind graffiti, his name carved into the dungeon pillar. That may be what the girls were looking at. I've been there and it smells like rock and the lake beyond the open window. It's beautiful during good weather, but must have been pure hell during the winter. The window is beyond reach so all the prisoners could ever see was that small patch of sky.
