Daily Short: Kyo 13

Kyo was pondering a terrible truth about the universe at large. She knew about the vastness of reality from her big sister. It was something that occupied her thoughts after the incident with Mr. Clay. Talos had taken to drinking a weird-smelling substance after learning the garden was filled with blood-hungry plants. She’d asked Big Sis Nota about the truth, but the answer had made her eyes spin.

Which is better? Kyo thought, staring at the plate in front of her. Bacon or Sausages?

The sausage had a great deal going for it. It was meat, it was bite-sized, it was tasty, and it was meat. All points were in favor of it. Her eyes shifted to the left side of the plate, where innocently thin slices of bacon sizzled in soft seduction. Bacon had a great deal going for it, too. It was meat, it was tasty, it smelled like divine providence, and it was thin meat.

Thin meat means I can stack more of it in my stomach. Kyo thought as her willpower wavered. She picked up two forks and decided to table the inquiry for another day. Two forks in hand, meat cannot withstand!

Mr. Clay sat on her shoulder today with the air of a benevolent emperor. She had tried hiding the brick in various places, but it always appeared on her shoulder after she woke up. She’d be brushing her teeth, and suddenly there would be a clay commando on her shoulder. Complaining to Big Sis, Nota hadn’t gotten anywhere. Kyo was almost sure her sister was laughing; either that or Talos was practicing singing.

Today was a week after the Garden Battle. Kyo was due to make another batch of mana crystals, and she’d been waiting for it. The garden informed her of intruders even as she thought about the upcoming crystal production in the lab. Kyo had taken several days to notify the park that Talos wasn’t nutrition.

Plant Manipulation IV let her explain precisely how sad she would be if the butcher died. She had finally gotten the point across, almost in tears, by imagining all the meals that would be missed. That was when she learned that plants could only remember three people. Not surprisingly, they were plants, not crystal computers with perfect memories. Big Sis Nota had explained that to her after Kyo had complained.

I could have stacked everyone in there. Robert the Lion, Sene, Talos, Me, Nota. Kyo thought, finishing breakfast with a vengeance. Mr. Clay deserves to be eaten by plants, though.

“Door,” Kyo said, turning to Talos, who had been about to sit at the table with his meal.

Talos raised an eyebrow and said, “Sene’s back?”

“Un,” Kyo said. She’s started taking to using fewer words because of laziness. Why spend the extra effort if two words worked as well as ten? That was the logic she had explained to Big Sis. Nota had surprisingly agreed that she was familiar with individuals who did the same thing. Kyo had felt extremely warm and fuzzy, learning that her method of communication was standard.

Familiar to short children, but still common!

“Are they going to be okay going through the garden?” Talos said as his fork shook slightly before he glanced at it.

“Un?” Kyo said, thinking hard. The plants probably wouldn’t attack Sene. She’d made sure they were the two remembered along with herself. Kyo shrugged as she took the forks and plate to the sink. Floating up, she deposited them in the kitchen sink before going into hover mode.

“That is super creepy to watch, sometimes,” Talos said, looking at her with annoyance.

“OOooooOoooo,” Kyo said, imitating the spirit sounds she’d heard at a play once.

“Do not, and I repeat, do not do that in the middle of the night, or I will never cook for you again,” Talos said firmly.

“Wuuuuuuuu,” Kyo said as her ears flattened. Why were the threats consistently over something precious?

Her mood was sad only for a moment as the plants informed Kyo that Sene had arrived. There were a lot of people with her. Stretching her sight, she looked through the plants at Sene.

The men surrounding Sene were the same guards that had murdered her!

Kyo felt a flash of betrayal before seeing Sene’s hands tied. There was blood around her lips, and one eye was closed. It took a moment for her to register that this was the work of someone being tortured for information.

Only my friend lives. Kyo sent the request to the garden. There was no need for her killers to enjoy life any longer. She watched with cold eyes as the plants ripped into the invaders. It didn’t escape her notice that Sene had a soft smirk on her face.

Ah! Kyo thought. Sene had led them here to be disposed of because she couldn’t beat them alone!

Okay maybe Sene knew exactly what could happen if a plant manipulator is near deadly plants...
