It's a major plot point in both the American and Japanese movies that the viewer is cursed to die 7 days after watching the video unless the tape is copied and shown to someone else.

Especially since it came off as rapey since a lot of the guys were reluctant and the girl was pressuring them hard to do it. And while you can question King's motives for the scene.
