im pretty sure there was a point where burning man and woodstock got mixed up but i cant tell cause their the same thing in my brain anyway

PuffTheDargon

I think your criticisms of the us burn are mostly valid, but my experience is of my local one in NZ, and it's only like 2500 people in a lush green field and forest with a river so it's wildly different 😂

Talk of burning man makes me think about how all american festivals seem to become bigger than the original intention and into a commercial marketing scheme. Coachella is more about influencers than music, EDC was a premium EDM event before 'EDM' become what the US call EDM but has become a rich kids drug party and Burning Man is the older hippy version of both without the music. The events are still cool but the core is the minority now. As a fan of nearly all the bands from Woodstock, many of them not only made statements about the crowd but even tried to condemn actions but in a rock high energy way, The Offspring frontman Dexter supposedly called out sexual assault as it was happening as did others. I remember at the time Limp Bizkit were blamed for the violence as they incited the crowd but it was like everything else in the 90s blaming nu metal and video games for violence is an easy out and it was way more complex.

It's hard to understand burns (they happen all over the world, not just the US) at first glance. But it's not cosplaying poverty, it's more like a social experiment about not having capitalism or the expectations that come with it (irony of tickets and expenses aside). You get to see how differently humans connect without relying on a 'system', just a variety of principles to not be a dick. Like decommodification - what happens and how do you relate to people when everything; experiences, art, events, music (there is massive sound camps), food, drink, treasures, clothes, costumes is freely gifted (not bartered) with no obligations, and mostly from complete strangers. It's a good way to experience the kind of community humans used to have, and also be as ridiculous as you like. Imagine a whole city, filled with bars, clubs, libraries, greenhouses, acrobats, restaurants, coffee shops, swing sets, lounges, interactive art, science night, crazy rideable vehicles, movie and hammock stations, photo booths, game shows, a ridiculous postal service - everything you can think of and all of it was brought by everyone else and gifted. It's fun af and a great bonding experience. Alice in wonderland type shit

I could never have guessed that Tow Mater would be Maya's favourite character also i am really enjoying these stories that you guys have learned of even if it isnt 100% the truth

Glitch

Fun stream idea, getting CPR certified with the homies ;)

Catbug

Actually it was Tormater that made the wheel, the guys made of four of them, get your facts straight ladies

ntGonzo

Good episode. Since I'm pretty introverted and don't really partake in such debauchery, I didn't know those festivals were so eccentric. I will say that Woodstock sounds LIT *badum tss*. It's pretty cool that QT didn't choke to death on a chicken tender though.

Zay

girl what are you talking about

no one

Can you be more specific?

Michal Dobrzynski

you guys are charming and funny but y'all ought to shy away from making assertions about the world (except Maya who knows about animals). i can't watch an hour of people being ignorant.

The common problem seams to be coming up when an originally good community event gets caught in the gears of capitalism and somehow someone inexperienced and greedy gets in charge. The stories remind me of the way the “Loveparade” ended in a tragedy after the rights were sold.

soloPFL

Look, i respect y'all but clearly the best possible Purge plan is to get on a boat with supplies and go far into the middle of the ocean until the 24hrs are up. If any non-homicidal WAI fans wanna $$ together for a yacht, I'm open to suggestions:)

VancityRen

"Burning Man is a national emergency" was mainly clickbait from mainstream media. I am surprised you have this apparent dislike for people who seem to just want to come together to escape from their average lives for a few days and managed to create one of the largest events in the world.

N.N.

maya's bug propaganda has actually influenced me to let some small spiders in my bathroom stay and they've actually gotten an insane amount of gnats and a few bugs bigger than themselves

The podcast TruAnon was the one who created the rumors about ebola at burning man. It was a joke that some people didn't realize was a joke. Y'all can check out their twitter for the original tweet that started the rumor. Their newest podcast is about that whole situation.

Really is interesting listening to people who don't know shit about burning man talk about burning man. You have some good solid points, but also clearly don't know much. Burning man can be wasteful and has become more wasteful especially when people with the party mindset and not the original mindset come. It has become more like Coachella, and a lot of the original burners are not happy about it because they don't adhere to pack out mentality. A lot of the shelters that get built and broken down, get stored for the next year and built again. There is some waste, but a lot of people who put the effort in don't have the money to build anew every year. They re-use until they can't anymore. A lot of the art installations are re-used every year. But there is a lot of waste. The nearby town constantly deal with abandoned bikes. There are a lot of people who buy stuff and abandon it. The nearby town's economies are built around stocking one-off items like bottled water food for people prior to the burn. It's not the first time Burning man has been rainy, wet & muddy. The major problem is emergency services not being able to get out. But well prepared attendees bring enough water & food. You bring extra to trade. It's mostly the hype of the storm that is unusual for the coast that brought news of it at all. Your points are good, but could have used more knowledge and actual fact driven problems to bring up. It's well documented from nearby cities what the problems are. But I still think you got to the heart of the problems. It's outside perspective to something that you can know a lot about, so you can see how you or your interests, or your peers are perceived by others.

Damnit I listened to this in bits and all I remember was that someone named Jose saved QTs life 😂

Jose Marin

Maya should watch Coco if she thinks forgetting the inventor of the wheel, or saying "cheese", doesn't matter!!! Jokes aside, great episode!

Ruben

I personally believe anything I hear as long as it is not harmful / does not matter (ie the history of burning man / woodstock) so you can say whatever and i'll be like hehe wow that's crazy :) i will not fact check any of this :)
