It’s like living with a teenager, she thought with a wry smile. She adjusted her glasses, which she’d forgotten she’d left on from earlier, and started dusting off his desk. She grabbed a cloth, deciding to surprise him with a freshly cleaned man cave. Maybe he’d say thank you, maybe he’d actually appreciate her, even if only for a split second. As she dusted the desk, her cat, Shadow, jumped up, his gleaming black eyes fixed on Derek’s mouse like it was prime prey.
“Shadow, no—” she muttered, swatting his paws away. But her hand slipped, and the mouse skittered across the desk, nudging his laptop awake. She froze as the screen blinked on.
