Step-by-Step (3): Coloring People

Speedpaint Videos are always fun and a good way to actually see how a drawing is rendered, so have this Daichi Commission as an example of how I approach my coloring for a person.

There's a couple steps I tend to repeat, but with time, processes change or evolve, e.g. I'm currently experimenting a little with my linework: Usually I draw a cleaner version of the sketch first before going into color, but sometimes I feel like I'm losing too much of the original feel along with it, which is why I'm trying to clean up the sketch right now - so I have more control of what traces it leaves behind in the final drawing.

Sometimes drawings get to keep more sketch-esque aesthetics and other times I really dig in there to clean it up as much as possible, it really depends what I'm aiming for (or what a customer prefers if it's a commission piece).

There is no one way, even if it sometimes seems like it, but some patterns tend to repeat. I like to start with flat colors to set a proper base and tones, followed by a sharp shadow layer before I go underneath with a softer shadow and colors to accentuate parts of the body that I want to have more shape and life.

I really don't feel like I can decide if I like the simpler, more anime-esque appearance or the more rendered, realistic drawings, so it ends up being a mashup with variing degrees of either
Which do you prefer in my art? Let me know below!😙

I love speedpaints/timelapses/just plain watching artists color their sketches because so often it just feels like magic to me. It's really neat to see the drawing come to life in "real-time!"

thank you so much Rute! Glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you so much for your kind words Lacey! yeah it is a little more time consuming since I have to go back and forth more than when I have a set outline layer that's already "clean" where everything is a bit more streamlined, but I feel like it helps with everything flowing better in the end. The way colors and lines come together seems more organic that way. I'm still in the mids of figuring that technique out tho, so we'll see what sticks and what might return to old habits😉

Oh goodness!! I loved watching that! I honestly can’t say, I think it kind of depends on what it is you’re trying to render and what your goals are for the overall piece. I think your art is a beautiful mix of both! Bringing realism into the piece, or bringing softer components into a realistic piece is difficult as it is, but you really have a knack for it! I personally don’t prefer one or the other, I think It’s a unique style all by itself. Each artist has their specific style, and this is yours for SURE. ❤️ Does cleaning up while you’re adding color usually help or does it make it harder for you? Because it looks like to me, from the video, that it looks a little more time consuming for you, but that it gives you a better idea in the end for what you want? I love Daichi so much 💕 I’m excited!
