The Problem(s) With The Legend of Korra

A new Avatar: The Last Airbender spin-off series has been greenlit by Nickelodeon. It has a 26-episode order and will be titled Avatar: Seven Havens. What we know about the series thus far is this (via The Hollywood Reporter)”

“[…]set in a world shattered by a devastating cataclysm. A young Earthbender discovers she’s the new Avatar after Korra — but in this dangerous era, that title marks her as humanity’s destroyer, not its savior. Hunted by both human and spirit enemies, she and her long-lost twin must uncover their mysterious origins and save the Seven Havens before civilization’s last strongholds collapse.”

Now, people very quickly latched onto the implications that Korra has done something to change the Avatar from a savior to a destroyer. So now once again people are arguing about who is the better Avatar: Korra or Aang.

...my the lord have mercy on us all.

Thankfully, I am here to explain the real issues with The Legend of Korra. Ya welcome.

The Problem(s) With The Legend of Korra

“I get it girl; that’s your man, your man, your man” even as a Kataang shipper I had to laugh 💀💀🤣🤣

Off topic but have you read 'Doctor Aphra' if so I would love your opinion on her as a relatively recent leading female in the Star Wars ethos

I have this hatred for 1920s announcer voice that they use in Korra. Like it doesn't automatically make things clever, cute or interesting.

Idk I think kids are smart and can handle the lessons okay even if they don’t know the full history of imperialism/colonialism of the world. I remember reading young adult books that touched on imperialism/colonialism before learning of America’s history and involvement in these projects and feel like I leaned a lot from them. I think the lessons are appropriate for kids. It was actually fun(?) to learn about time in history where people really messed up and think “oh this reminds me of the plot of book 6 of that one series that I love.” If kids are smart and can grapple with and handle the complex/nuanced moral lessons okay, I can’t help but think that maybe the problem is the rules and regulations enforced on writing/animation/production staff? Who exactly gets to decide what is and what is not “appropriate for kids”. And what are their motives/beliefs?

Whenever Black voice actors are brought in to voice non-Black characters, you know they have to be supremely talented and probably have a terrific agent. Kimberly Brooks is the best Batgirl/Oracle we've ever had.

There’s a new Avatar spinoff? Crazy. We are actually living in the future.

Love the video! I've talked with my friends before about how while I do love Atla and Korra (and other shows like SU and even She Ra) that use colonization and imperialism as tools to showcase moral lessons in kids shows they do often run into the road block of -these are very real phenomena that happened in the world that are more complicated and nuanced than can necessarily be handled at the same time as trying to portray a kid appropriate lesson sometimes.

I admire Korra's character, but I recognize the many flaws in the story, mostly due to her being isolated for 'protection' and that absence grew cruel in thinking it didn't need an Avatar. I still stand by Avatar Korra and hope her successor can redeem whatever this conspiracy is against her

cannot wait to dive in i have been a (way too serious) A:LOK critic since the backhalf of season 1 and excited to hear your thoughts

I loved Korra growing up but realized as I got older & my writer brain developed I realized the show is kinda… overall not very high quality story. Esp not great compared to how great the series was on theme world building & cast chemistry
