Why Do People Think Princess Bubblegum is a Fascist?

Comments

I think the reason people say PB is a fascist online is the same reason people say stuff like "oh this cartoon from the 90s was secretly dark," like there's a type of online person that wants to make things that were for children into something edgy. I think this is especially funny because Adventure Time, more than most other cartoons I can think of, actually DOES have nuance and edge and all that.

I was never tapped into the Adventure Time fandom like that, so I wasn't cognizant of the "fascist allegations" against PB until the show had already "ended". Now by then, I had begun my Pursuit of a history degree and the actions of PB never quite lined up with the actions of actual fascist I read about. Which is to say, I never paid it any mind. That being said, I would love to do an entire Adventure Time rewatch now that I'm 26. Lining up my perspective as a 26-year-old with that of my 12/13 year old self would be such a blast. Also, you should definitely check out the Fiona and Cake Mini series. For me, it's one of the better shows of 2023.

My feelings on PB as a kid fluctuated. I found her a bit condescending at times but also like “girl boss, she’s smart and runs the kingdom!” I’ll have to rewatch AT again as a 26 year old woman. I’m sure my perspective will be much different vs when I was 11/12 when it first came out. I’m happy to be here with the Patreon family!❤️

I'm late to the party and just starting Adventuretime, so I will keep an eye out...for fascists!

I think this connects well with the video you made that talks about how the structure of the gem society in Steven Universe is meant more to be representative of a family dynamic than a governmental structure. PB literally created the candy people and candy society from scratch in a wasteland with no existing power structures. Her actions are almost explicitly characterized as that of an over protective parent rather than a peer who took control due to a will to power. Granted I still think many of her actions can be criticized but I don't think that real life political systems can be compared at a one to one ratio. For example one of my coworkers has cameras in his daughters bedrooms that livestream to his and his wifes phones. I think this is creepy and overly invasive (the kids are 8 and 9, not babies) but not fascist.
