Martha Jones Deserved Better (And Other Correct Takes)

Loved this! I thought the way you talked about the politics of romantic pairings was really nuanced and impactful. I always found it so insulting that they throw Martha and Mickey together out of convenience, as if they could have possibly had any chemistry. ๐Ÿ™„ I can't even remember what becomes of that Hot Boring Man they seem to be setting her up with after her entire family is enslaved by the Master (and only our white hero and his genius use of her obedient invisible labor can save them of course ๐Ÿ™ƒ). It's such a twist of the knife how they give Martha enough romantic angst over the Doctor that it invites empathetic identification but then all of her emotional progress has to happen offscreen and her ending is still about the Doctor's emo-paternalism manpain. Like yes good for her for leaving but angst is all she ever gets, and all in the service of reminding us to feel emotionally impacted by the previous finale. ๐Ÿ™„ Even when she gets to be a badass half the time it's still as his hype person and caretaker. Personally I never much liked the idea of the Doctor *canonically* dating a human, at least not a young inexperienced one who idolizes him and is basically his ward/pupil, but the series has been so inconsistent about how it handles this topic and no one got a worse intersection of attitudes thrown at her than Martha. I hope she's living in fully self-actualized bliss in a fanfic somewhere. Also, big same re: general Moffat nonsense lol. Much like with Sherlock I found those arcs were very good at commanding my narrative attention *at first* but by the end of 11/Amy/Rory I was much too frustrated to stay emotionally invested. I also really thought for a second they were finally going to have companions in New Who who simply get to *retire* and presumably the Doctor can still visit them offscreen sometimes, but noooo. Also has there ever been a more succinct example of Doctor Who Paternalism than suspensefully refusing to tell a woman she's mystic-pregnant until the literal moment she's about to give birth in space prison ๐Ÿ™ƒ But I hope the new series and the new Magic sets are bringers of joy! I'm excited to catch up and also to see Catherine Tate and David Tennant again!

Great video, and thanks so much for explaining how the show Doctor Who could have portrayed and treated Black characters better. Martha was so kind, interesting and charming, and the Doctor should have appreciated her much more and treated her much more respectfully.

Wanted to say two things: background music didn't bother me at all but you do you!, and I really appreciated your breakdown of Angels Take Manhattan. I was 12 when that episode aired and really invested in the superwholock world and watching it was genuinely deeply upsetting and I've never been able to express why as an adult. Great video!!

Squealed when I saw this video because the 2015 (when I began Doctor Who) urge to defend Martha will never, ever leave me. The thing that I still get really heated about is she does so much in her season. She's actually so incredibly competent, the Doctor leaves her on her own to save the day for sometimes a whole year, episode after episode it is this woman kicking ass and being so smart and incredible and substantial and neither the show nor the fandom seems to care because she's in love with the Doctor. Like she's so much else, canonically, but because she dares to fall in love with a hot stranger who shows her space and time she's dismissable. I watched her when I was 15, and she was such a role model (and part of my queer awakening). I like Rose okay, but I will never understand how Martha is so overlooked.

I never noticed that Matt smith didnโ€™t have eye brows! Also I only just recently got back to doctor who and I fell in love with Peter Capaldi! And Bill in season 10 was so joyful. It made the cybermen scary for me for the first time. Also I have big feelings about Clara and her black boyfriend so it makes sense to skip it or have a curated experience of season 8 and 9. Anyway, A+ video! Thank you for your work!

I understand. Ugh I keep going back and forth because I feel like I see background music in other videos and it helps smooth out the audio issues but whenever I do it I guess I choose weird ones. I think going forward Iโ€™ll just skip it. It doesnโ€™t seem to be something my audience likes. thank you for the feedback :)

I really enjoyed this episode. I have one critical comment to make: the background music gets annoying really fast. Maybe because it's so short and the tune is very noticable.

Your content has gotten me through an intense week at work, thank you!

Love this! This was the season that got me into Doctor Who when I was a teen. I remember feeling bad for Martha when her run completed because it seemed like her life was a bit derailed after being his companion.

Almost one hour of Doctor Who discussion? I feel spoiled
