How Blaise Zabini Changed Slytherin

When Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was released in 2005, J.K. Rowling finally described the Slytherin student character Blaise Zabini. A character many had head-cannoned as a white dark-haired Italian boy was now a Black teenager of exceptional beauty. For some, it wasn't even fully acknowledged until the film adaptation, but there was still a backlash from some fans who no longer thought the character "fit."

We will discuss the reaction to that revelation and why it complicated how Rowling wrote about Slytherin and Blood Purity. Even if she didn't realize it.

This video gave a very satisfying combination of sociopolitical analysis and joyful fandom nostalgia in a way that makes me want to find a fandom again. You're such an artful and engaging presenter (and I love the green).
