Paris Is Burning is a 1990 American documentary film directed by Jennie Livingston. Filmed in the mid-to-late 1980s, it chronicles the ball culture of New York City and the African-American, Latino, gay, and transgender communities involved in it. Critics consider the film to be an invaluable documentary of the end of the "Golden Age" of New York City drag balls, and a thoughtful exploration of race, class, gender, and sexuality in America.[4][5]
In 2016, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
The title takes its name from the Paris Is Burning ball held annually by artist Paris Dupree who appears in the film.

I was going to get into that during the movie night before hand, because I think that is a key part of the documentary and should be acknowledged. ♥️ I think in the previous movie night post that was deleted I wrote about it but I can update the post to add that in case x

2022-07-14 12:27:13 +0000 UTCI haven't been able to attend the movie nights due to timezone issues but will opt to sit this one out... I have viewed it before, and prefer not to see it again for the aforementioned reasons. Nothing against people watching it, it is bad or "wrong" but I do feel it necessary to point out the issues surrounding the making of this documentary and to understand that the representation and the portrayal should be understood in this context. I will never say "don't watch it" or criticize people who watch or screen it, but the context is a factor to take into account. Do enjoy the movie night!

2022-07-14 09:55:12 +0000 UTCHi, just want to point out the controversy that would be good to take into account to contextualize when watching this: The participants were not properly included in a meaningful way, and the representation was felt by participants afterwards as not something they felt was accurate. The "dynamics"between the filmmakers and the people subject of this documentary was problematic, which was voiced by several people featured in the documentary. It is a case of outsiders going into a community that they were not part of and many felt "used". While this is considered a great documentary, and it is one of the few (or only) that was made about ball culture at that time, I would highlight that this needs to be watched with the context in which it was made, as well as the power dynamics (and motives) of the filmmakers in mind...
