[Early Access] I Kissed a Girl: The Messy Legacy of a Queerbait Hit

FIXED AUDIO AND DELETED PREVIOUS ONE XX
The year was 2008. I still thought I was heterosexual and was going to marry Alan Rickman and that I wanted to be “best friends” with Emma Watson. On the horizon, a very problematic awakening was about to begin.

You know, I've been wondering if the t.a.t.u. girls ever made it to North America, or if their bops were just a European fever dream all along - so I'm glad to learn that that was in fact a universal experience for us all who were growing up at that time. Their songs also regularly make their ways into my spotify playlists in the year of our lord 2021 and I for one relish that.

I was very much enjoying this video and then YouTube throws up an ad featuring exoticized /noble savage/hula girl-esque East Asian women while I thought I was in my safe space and now I'm having to take a minute. You used to be able to give YouTube feedback directly about ads when they run, but it I can't figure out how to do it, would anybody have any ideas they can suggest?

Love this video! To add some dimension to the aughts, I also vividly remember how vilified and othered Lady Gaga was as someone who even slightly disrupted the then standard of bisexuality for the male gaze. There was a whole gross thing in the narrative/ media at the time that she was secretly a trans woman and not a bisexual woman. It’s crazy thinking back on that.

Oh I feel this both with being ace and why every guy that comes out has to be gay, gay representation matters, but I think if we run the stats cis white men in m/m relationships is what we get most representation of and I want bisexual guys to be able to exist and to be in relationships with women/ non binary folks. John Constantine gets that in Legends, but so often in the case of women it is only hinted at/or exclusively sexual with women and romantic with guys or on the other end they feel deeply afraid to put them in a 'non queer' relationship. When many bisexual women end up in 'hetro presenting' relationships out of not coming out until later or just by means that's there are often more guys than there are queer women or enbys in an area. And you are queer even if you are in a m/f relationship.
There is actually a really good coversation of this in She of The Mountains by Vivek Shraya, she is trans and bi and it is a story specifically dealing with how the main character (unnamed) is constantly having his relationship trivialized or told he is just wanting to look straight by dating a woman. The whole book is gorgeous but I was so happy to see male bisexuality discussed.

No, because my strongest memory of this song is my little sister kissing a girl and my mom yelling at us about how it was because we listened to this song (mind you, neither of us had mp3 players or owned the song in any form, we simply listened to it when it played on top 40 radio)

Great video. Loving the look. Was looking forward to this one for the longest. Appreciate the Ace inclusion.
In terms of bisexuality I am both disappointed in its use as a gimmick for women in the entertainment business while also erasing the existence of bisexual men. Like, especially men, it’s one or the other. As an X-Men fan while I LOVE the idea of Ice Man being in a same-sex relationship and completely support his true love being another man, I don’t care for him just being gay as opposed to being bisexual and having to deal with the stress of suppressing his homosexual desires while fighting for his rights (and the lives of his friends) as a mutant. The “B” in Bobby needs to stand for “bisexual.”
As someone who is on the Asexual spectrum (Demisexual) once I realized where I aligned in the rainbow I still didn’t know if I truly belonged in the Queer community because I felt as if I could “pass” or “hide” and that, romantically, I still fantasized about men. Fictional men, but still. Even now I’m still having this sense of guilt and Imposter Syndrome about feeling as if I can identify as Queer. In my late 20s I’m still figuring this out and I can’t help but think if I had more upfront and honest representatives in media of (Black) Queer relationships I would be a lot further in understanding myself now.
Although what I am very confident about and have been since my tweens is how much I loved Xena and Gabrielle, Willow and Tara, The L Word, Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune, the Lady Gaga obsession, and Harley Quinn being with Poison Ivy. Janelle Monae’s Dirty Computer is EVERYTHING. I’m very excited for Pose this coming weekend. Monterey (Call Me By Your Name) is still on repeat.
