Your analysis of the show had me interested in making my own opinion of it and....I agree with you. It goes there but the point gets muddled due to Sam not being a driving force in the show until episode 5, maybe, and solidly episode 6. I'm glad the material is out there to be consumed/watched and hope more meaningful experiences occur for Sam in his Blackness.

We're watching this with our 9-year old, so baby radical is perfect discussion fodder.

I had no idea people were upset about Bucky being disarmed. That is ridiculous on several levels. We loved it. The forethought. Initially loved that Eli was included in the scene with Isaiah, but it was also a distraction, since his storylines are more recent and more light-hearted. What bugs me about the Flag Smashers storyline is what kind of utopia could develop in just five years. Out of trauma no less. I'm sure their age is a factor. But also what led to camps for so many people rather than going home to de-Blipped loved ones. I'm still hoping that Sharon is deep cover rather than out in the cold but that may be too optimistic.

I was of the opinion that episodes 1-3 were weak because of the baby radical stuff and a lot of the reasons Princess pointed out. Its frustrating that they'll dip their toe in the water of topics like these and pull the reins back and scream PROGRESSIVE. Danielle mentioning standards between different corps did put it in another perspective I appreciate. With that being said 4-6 seem like they will actually be better which leads me to this assessment. I like where the show is going but I don't love how it got there. Also I'm Team Karli until someone from the show "shows" me a good reason not to be.

I decided after episode 4 that I would wait until it's finished. The first two episodes were really promising, but following that I began feeling frustrated with it. I think the showrunners wanted to push the material and messaging more but got pulled back by the constraints of being a Disney production. While the conversation between Sam and Karli's talk in the fourth episode was well written, I felt it was a little disingenuous for Sam to go "I agree with you but not your methods" when he's a military contractor who began the show carrying out a military operation. Is Sam's cause more just than hers? Sam is a really great character and I think he deserves more than what this show is willing to do. The only issue I have with John Walker is how (imo) he is framed as a "bad apple", as the characters aren't allowed to criticize their government for giving him the shield, the costume and the resources. John is a tool, but he is an American military tool, and he did not steal the shield so much as it was handed to him like an Excalibur by the government. I'll say though, I think shows like HBO Watchmen and The Boys (s2) really raised the bar for an examination of American politics and policing in relation to superhero media. Those shows are also more explicitly for adults and not a general audience. Also Ayo did nothing wrong disarming Bucky, and Zemo getting - for lack of a better term - "Loki'd" is frustrating given he's an aristocrat who killed a king and then complains about super soldiers because it started affecting him on a personal level.

That’s a good point!

It’s funny that you’re underwhelmed by this show being baby radical, but I’m actually impressed by its baby radical-ness because of the platform that it is premiering on. If it were on Netflix, I would probably feel the same way you do. But I can’t help but be happy with what they are letting be told on Disney+. I actually really like this show, a lot better than WandaVision, while I understand what WV was trying to do, the story fell apart at the end, while TFATWS gets better with each episode. And this show feels like one that could continue its story with another season or a movie. So I’m excited about what is happening next. But agree about how people are so easy with the Zemo stuff. Like he did nothing, his dancing wasn’t even the funniest part of the episode but that was enough for the fandom to thirst after him and it’s annoying. But I do hope that these last two episodes focus on Sam and not Bucky, cause while Bucky is narratively more interesting, there’s still so much more to do with Sam that the way haven’t explored that I really want them to. They put his name first in the title so he should be a priority character. That’s my one disappointment with the show is they don’t focus on Sam enough. Also, i really enjoy Karli too, she’s great and I’m curious how they’re going to finish her story as well.

The show runner didnt explicitly say it was a show about the black experience but more so in line with the theme of 'survivors guilt'. Both Sam and Bucky unite in honor of Steve's memory and you see them constantly discussing what Steve would have wanted for his legacy. So even though Anthony Mackie wanted a more politics oriented show ultimately what we've seen so far is soldiers learning how to find a life after thier comrades have fallen in battle.

aaaah, i have so many things to say about these 4 episdoes. and i do really agree that this show is really stuffed. but i can say that i love it since it has given me a lot to think about. so many things that connect in weird and interesting ways for me to think about. but im better at talking than i am at writing so writing things up is all kinds of jumbled for me XD. but i can talk A LOT about this show.

I agree, including some Wandavision into this comment, but Marvel is playing it safe. My co-workers and friends are lauding this as "woke," and I'm like, " it is basic." I do like it, but I'm not in love with it. I don't think Marvel will change their tactics.
